“And we’ve been burned by all our fearsJust from growin’ up around hereOur father’s factories marked our cardsWhile Eden burned against the stars.”
- Gaslight Anthem, “Meet Me By The River’s Edge“
'He drew- for a moment, Malik had no idea what he was doing, adding five odd rounded blobs to jut out of the main design, then a pointu one. "See?" / "No," Malik admitted. / "It's a turtle." / "Oh my-" Malik snatched the stylus back from Kerran as the man laughed, undeterred. "No." ' I love this little bit, laughed out loud on reading it! :D
Kerran is a dork, bless him. <3
I'm one of the crowd who knows zero things about roller derby, but this au, the family stuff, the fact that Jack is not an asshole nnngh /claws face I love this
/claws face too, I knooooooooow. I am weak to families, I am weak to Jack not being an irredeemable prick, I am weak to unconventional family structures more than anything-- aaaaah uwu
I'm getting the vibe that jack in roller derby au has not experienced betrayal by his friends, and I keep thinking about how his dynamic with rhys would be very different. I'm wonder what do you think? ozo
That is probably the most important aspect of Jack in any AU, the amount of betrayal he’s dealt with. So yes he’s probably closer to Deerlegs than Handsome, and that lets him still be a bit of a fucker at times but generally a good person.
Jack and Rhys, oh man, Jack is a hurricane. He still runs Hyperion and is actively competing with everyone else in the megacorp game. I think because Hyperion has its fingers in so many pies, Jack needs a small fleet of assistants who get him to his meetings, who keep him up to date on everything going on in the company, and help him steer the huge burdensome ship that is Hyperion.
And Rhys is the king of the PAs, having worked his way up the ranks. He’s the one all the lower rungs on the ladder feed information up to and he gets the most important bits he tells to Jack. He’d have immense power, like access to Jack’s bank account and the ability to sign off on projects because Jack doesn’t have time so his judgement is trusted on a lot of things.
And of course he’s trusted, his last job was taking care of Angel, and he proved himself there.
God what if the roller derby thing was Nisha’s idea. She’s watching Jack just work Rhys into the ground and the boy’s gonna have a meltdown before he’s thirty if he doesn’t get something to alleviate the issue. So when Hyperion buys the roller derby team, Nisha tells Jack to give it to Rhys and to give Rhys a break for a few months.
Rhys still has to coordinate much of Jack’s life from his phone, but not being physically at Hyperion does wonders for him.
ETA: I realized i didn’t even answer your question i’m the worst
