You lean against the front counter, eyes focused on the words of the book you’ve been trying to read for weeks. You’ve never been able to focus on the book at home and you felt unproductive reading at work despite the lack of customers at the late hour. But this night has been unusually slow so you decided to crack open the hefty fellow to read. It’s not that it was boring but you had the attention span of a golden retriever.
That’s why you hated working the overnight shift. You always needed something to do, to keep you occupied. There were only so many dusty corners you could clean everyday. But because it was your own business, you found yourself working overnights so your employees didn’t have to as most of them were college students. You understood the severity of late night studying, despite dropping out after your first college semester, so you decided to be a good and loving boss and give them their freedom after 4 pm. It was hard to be the boss of people around your age but you were a business owner already so they tended to listen well anyhow.
Your favorite feline friend, a naked kitty in his green sweater, purrs his way right upon your book. That was his way of getting your attention, and it worked every time. You kiss the top his head and fix his sweater. You owned a cat cafe, but not one like any other. You found it rather unsanitary to have hairy friends, as cute as it was, around where people were enjoying food and drink so you decided to open a cat cafe, but with hairless cats. It also made it friendly for those with allergies. Although the large neon sign that read “The Naked Bean” with a big kitten face was quite unusual to most at first, you became a hot spot during the day.
The only reason you were 24 hr was for the late night workers, or night owls like yourself. The shop died down around 6 pm, giving you time to do a deep clean and semi reset for the next day. You got an occasional customer or few, but usually you found yourself trying to stay busy. Luckily there was always a cat to bother.
You have 15 hairless cats occupying your store, they all have names to match their personalities and color coded sweaters to keep them warm, and help you differentiate between them. It was a lot of work to take care of the felines, twice a week you brought each of them upstairs to your apartment, which made being the owner of a 24 hr cafe extremely easy, and gave them all a bath and rubbed them down with coconut oil. They were technically your cats, as they’d lounge around your apartment while you washed their clothes. (One of your employees had even installed a cat door to the door that lead to the stairs to your apartment so the cats could hide and come up if need be)
There was various cat towers and walkways along the walls of the cafe, more than enough for 15 cats. You decorated with plants, for fresh air, and even had a lounge area where people could cuddle with the cats. They’re hairless, so they spend a lot of time staying warm with customers. It was a lot of money to start up and get perfect to your standards, but dropping out of college helped you open it up. And your cafe was the most popular cafe in Seoul, so you were able to make back the money fairly easily.
“Oh Dave,” you sigh, petting behind the ears of the cat in the green sweater. “I’m so bored.” you mumble to him, smiling as he reaches a paw out indicating he wants to be held.
You had a close bond with Dave, he followed you around everywhere. And he loved being held by you. You pick up the naked feline, holding him up to your shoulder so he can crawl inside the hood of your sweater and make himself comfortable. That was where he spent a lot of his time, it’s the main reason you even wore hoodies. He laid so his body hung in the hood with just his head poking out on your shoulder.
You close your book and slip it back under the register, where it spends most of its time. You walk over to the speakers that play music quietly and turn it up so you can hear better. You rearrange the lounge area once, then again, and again. You immediately become dissatisfied so you grab your laptop and start browsing for completely new furniture to satisfy your needs.
You sit down on the couch, kicking off your slippers to rest your feet on the coffee table. You get deep into browsing furniture sets that you don’t even hear the bell to the store ding until a deep voice speaks up.
“Is no one working?” You look up to the voice, standing up and slipping your feet back into your slippers.
“Im so sorry, people usually don’t come in around this time.” You laugh, setting the laptop down on the table and rushing behind the counter. You glance at the time, the clock reading 2:30 am.
The customer smiles, fixing his beanie on his head and stepping to the counter while looking around. “I always pass by, but this is my first time in.” he says, poking the cat bobble head on the counter.
“Oh well I’m glad you decided to stop in, ive been bored out of my mind,” You laugh, feeling Dave nuzzle his head into your neck. The customer laughs softly along with you, his eyes focusing on the cat in your hood.
“I can tell, I saw you moving furniture when I passed by earlier,” He reaches over to scratch the top of Dave’s head. “I’m guessing this is a cat cafe?”
You look around, noticing most of the cats have made their way up to your apartment. “I’ll go get the others for you,” You quickly rush to the deep green door that leads to your apartment and open it.
“Shake that bag right there for me. “ The customer does as you ask, and you watch as the rest of the cats immediately rush down the steps at the sound of treats. The customer’s eyes widen, a laugh erupting from his throat.
How cute.
“I see why it’s called the naked bean now,” He pets the few cats that make their way to him.
“Would you like a few minutes to look at the menu?” You question, motioning to the boards above you. He nods in response, reading the menu over a few times, while you wait patiently.
He’s very cute. He has a dark look but you can tell just from the way he reacted to the cats that he’s a softy all the way to the bone.
“I think I’ll have the house special waffle and the, uhm, caramel macchiato. Hot please.” He says, reaching into his pocket for his wallet. You nod and type his order into the screen to tell him his payment.
“Can I have your name?” You ask. You didn’t actually need his name for the order, as he was the only person in there, but he doesn’t need to know that.
“You can just put Woo,” he smiles slightly.
“Alright Woo, well I’m y/n. Nice to meet you,” You grin at him, noticing a slight blush that dusts across his cheeks.
Woo pays and sits down in the lounge where the cats have gathered while you make his order. You quickly wisk the batter for his waffle to pour in the maker to cook while you make his coffee. You decide to make yourself a macchiato as well, setting the two cups on a tray. Once his waffle is done you drizzle the house special honey glaze on it and set it on a plate. You grab the tray and rush over to where Woo sits, setting the tray down on the table and taking your spot back on the couch.
He quickly thanks you and takes a sip of his coffee. “Mm,” he hums in satisfaction. “I usually don’t drink macchiatos, but this..” His lips form a tight line as he groans in delight.
“Macchiatos are my specialty,” You chuckle, leaning back, careful not to crush the cat in your hood.
“I can tell, i’m definitely gonna be back after this.”
“Good, I could use someone coming in at this hour before I start to lose my damn mind!”
