Saint Agnes of Rome

Patronage: Betrothed couples, chastity

St. Agnes was a Roman girl who was only twelve or thirteen years old when she suffered martyrdom for her Faith. Agnes made a promise to God never to stain her purity. When the Prefect Sempronius wished Agnes to marry his son and she refused, he condemned her to death. She is one of seven women, excluding the Blessed Virgin, commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass. She is the patron saint of chastity, gardeners, girls, engaged couples, rape victims, and virgins.

Saint Justin Martyr

Feast Day: June 1

Patronage: philosophers. lecturers, orators, apologists, speakers

Saint Justin Martyr was the son of pagan parents that came to the faith through Platonic intellectual philosophy. He was the first great apologist and his writing today continues to teach and defend the faith. His writings describe the Catholic Mass and the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Justin died after being scourged and then beheaded for refusing to sacrifice to the gods.

Saint George

Died: 303

Feast Day: April 23

Patronage: England, crusaders, soldiers

Saint George was a Roman soldier of Greek Christian origin. He was a Praetorian guard for Diocletian who valued his service. When the Emperor ordered the soldiers to sacrifice to the gods, St. George refused, even after Diocletian offered him land, money, and slaves. George was then tortured and decapitated. He is one of the 14 Holy Helpers and a prominent military patron often depicted fighting a dragon used to represent the devil. Today he’s known and revered by both Christians and Muslims.

Saint Katharine Drexel

Patronage: Philanthropists, racial justice

One of the 12 American Saints, St. Katharine Drexel was an American heiress, philanthropist, religious sister, educator, and foundress. Taking religious vows in 1891, she is known for her selfless service of the oppressed.
