YES CATE.
All of the Carol fans out there! I have made a little discovery, I watched Carol again a couple of nights again & noticed something in the love scene that I’ve never noticed before (even know I have watched it an uncountable amount of times) when Carol is running her hands through Therese’s hair the radio is in the background & you can hear on the radio the presenter speaking about the new year & it’s so relevant to the book & their feelings in that moment, I can’t make out everything the presenter says if you do please let me know but it’s something like this:
(what I can make out): “And I’m looking up now and I’m seeing the snow flaking down and I’m seeing a pale whimsical” then I can’t make out the rest but it ends with “as the new year starts it’s wondrous (or wonderful) journey into eternity”
In the book: "Then Carol slipped her arm under her neck, and all the length of their bodies touched fitting as if something had prearranged it. Happiness was like a green vine spreading through her, stretching fine tendrils, bearing flowers through her flesh. She had a vision of a pale white flower, shimmering as if seen in darkness, or through water. Why did people talk of heaven, she wondered"
I love that Todd so quietly it in there because it really explains their emotions in that moment & I think it definitely really pays homage to the book.
UPDATE:
My beautiful friend Vidisha worked out what the presenter says & It has just made that scene even more meaningful finding out those small details that I had missed this is what she sent me;
So you notice this celebratory song in the background, right? It plays right before the commentary begins & right before Carol kisses Therese, It's called "Auld Lang Syne". Extremely popular in Scottish and British cultures and other nations too. This is an interesting excerpt from Wikipedia -
"As well as celebrating the New Year, "Auld Lang Syne" is very widely used to symbolise other "endings/new beginnings"
And then the commentary goes like this-
Radio announcer: "and I'm looking up now, as the snow comes drifting down, and I see a pale winter moon over times Square as the new year starts its lumbering journey into eternity"
