Cat Or Nine Tails (1971) When a blind ex reporter overhears a conversation that he links to a murder, he partners with a current reporter to get to the bottom of the crime! Surprisingly this is Argento’s least favourite work. This still shines however, maybe not as bright as some of his other films, but this still has its own charm and positives going for it. The film does a grand job of leading you around to new clues, new leads, just to throw that lead out and push you into another. Even an hour and a half in I still had no idea who did it. If I’m being critical I think it maybe does this a bit too much and can go on slightly, clocking in just under 2 hours long, but it’s mass of red herrings make it this long. The film contains the works of soundtrack expert Ennio Morricone, and his distinct style can be heard from the start and throughout, the soundtrack is comprised of mystery and does a great job of accompanying the thriller. The acting is probably on the better side of the 70s performances I’ve seen recently and apart from some of the questionable decisions of the blind lead! Unfortunately I found the ending underwhelming after the long build up, not that I didn’t enjoy who it was or why, it just felt very sudden and very over in an instant. I also want to say that this film leaves a blind man in charge of being on watch in a grave robbery... let that sink in! Overall, I think Argento did a decent job here, if maybe overdoing it a bit. It’s a solid giallo that will have you guessing all the way through.
