this one is kind of a note-to-self little thing! i think i was going to do a drabble at some point to go along with it? but never got that far so it's still only the original list and a few other little notes </3
but! even if the drabble hasn't happened, it still functions as a good reference for myself as to what everyone's bat forms look like! (or would look like, in the case of those who haven't been turned or at least turned into bats (yet?))
Abolish: Small black bat with large ears. Fluffy neck fur. -> modern form has vitiligo
Apo: Mid-sized russet bat, somewhat fluffy.
Avid: Small, dark gray bat. Large eyes are very dark violet or red, near-black.
Cleo: Small russet bat, neck fur is curly. Green or red rings around otherwise dark irises.
Drift: Mid-sized brown bat with large ears and eyes.
Legs: Very large, gray and white bat. Missing an eye, since glass eye counts as “worn item” by transformation’s rules. Right eye has a green or red ring around the otherwise dark iris -> left eye is milky white after body regrows it at higher tier. Fur thinner at joints.
Martyn: Small pale yellow bat with fluffy neck fur. Pale blue or dark red eyes. Can be mistaken for leucistic.
Owen: Small brown bat with large ears and fluffy neck fur. Large red-brown eyes.
Pearl: Very large black and brown bat with large ears. Dark blue or red eyes that are near-black. Largest of the group.
Pyro: Mid-to-large black bat with pale blue or dark red-black eyes.
Ren: Large brown and gray bat with large ears. Small eyes, blue or red rings around otherwise dark irises. Fluffy neck fur, but fur is thinner at joints.
Sausage: Large brown bat with small ears. Dark eyes with blue or red rings around irises.
Scott: Mid-sized white bat with red eyes. Can be mistaken as having albinism.
Shelby: Tiny russet bat, smallest of the group. Small amber or dark red eyes.
Hmmm may I ask after the mysterious "Text note 01/18"?
This one is fun because i had completely and totally forgotten about it until i was going through my notes looking for wips, but the concept is so intruiging i might actually have to write it.
Basically Avid accidentally kills one of the early vampires and panics and runs away. Pyro finds the body and, not wanting to be blamed for murder a second time, buries it without telling anyone. Avid experiences regret and goes back to bring the body back to town and confess to what he did, but cant find it now.
And thinking about it, the only early vampire that would make sense in this scenario is Shelby.
Hiya just wanted to drop by and let you know how much I'm enjoying your "a duty to others" fic! You do SUCH a good job of keeping the dialogue sounding in-character and building the scenes!
Also I forgot in my review, but "Self centered, but only in the way someone treading water might push a drowning swimmer away, to avoid killing them both" was a fantastic line, really captured v!Cleo's essence :D
THANKS! (I really like that line too, it was the first one I wrote and it stayed through all the revisions.)
I'm really enjoying writing the story- I really do like introspective character pieces. I generally sit on how to make the scene happen without it seeming shoehorned in or out of character for- well. A week or two, honestly. I had ideas for the first chapter, Cleo and Apo's, and Scott's chapters pretty much immediately, but got a little stuck on Pyro's. I knew I wanted Pyro's chapter second, Apo Cleo and Shelby's somewhere in the middle, Scott second to last, and then one or two more Owen-centric chapters if I can manage it.
That's actually as much goes into my outlines! I've been dabbling with how to improve my writing for a few years now, and I've learned a lot doing events, coauthoring things with people, and trying new methods. But for the life of me I cannot properly outline a story. I generally have a vague idea of how I want it to go, and then think on it for a week or two, and write down any jokes or dialogue that come to me so I don't forget it. (Jokes and dialogue will NEVER come to you when you need to actually write the story, you need to write it down as soon as you think of it lmao.)
Everyone's comments and kudos and engagement has been so wonderful. I don't mind numbers too much, but having people to TALK TO about vampires in the comments or notes or askbox has been so delightful and exactly what I was looking for.
I've been in a pretty low place recently, and I really do mean it in my fic notes when I say even if I don't get a chance to respond to every comment, they all get read and reread when I'm feeling down on myself lmao. So thanks a lot guys!
i somehow didn't see this coming. lack of foresight is such a cruel fate.........
u know, i assumed if i got any for characters, this would be The One i got bc i'm like the patron saint of both of them lmao but admittedly i didn't think this question would be quite so hard as it's suddenly striking me...................
natori is the og favorite character, what drew me into the movie to begin with for shallow reasons albeit!! but i've still grown to find him a very comforting character to revisit, and i've poured so much love and effort into imagining him as a full-fledged character that i'm not sure i could ever just drop him
but now the cat king has sorta caught up to him, with a nearly totally opposite personality that's just as much of a delight to pick apart and reverse engineer, with countless insecurities, eccentricities, and sad little mundane traumas all his very own, some of which also happen to tickle my brain in just such a way ghfhfhi
so. for today at least. i'm going with the cat king, just bc i feel like i plucked natori off a high shelf where he was gathering dust behind some beautiful trinket, but i kinda just dug the cat king out of a dumpster. and that makes me feel sad for him ghfopgehai
he's a mess but i still think he'd make himself at home and be a nice cat to someone who loved him lmao
another hard choice!!! given my own personal focus in tcr is usually on the cat kingdom, it probably makes sense i don't write either of them a lot. but they both have Hooks in their characters that give me pause and cause to linger on them in much the same way i do the cat kingdom-- i love imagining toto as a very old creation with an entire history wrapped up behind him, and the idea of muta as Something Else than either a cat kingdom native or a normal human world cat without further explanation always has my vote
but i think i might have to go with toto in this case, if only bc i think his specific mixture of traits as i imagine them-- easygoing and playful but responsible, sure-footed and reserved and occasionally too callous in his 'hands-off' nature, and wise but still open to being taught new things he'd never considered. also love the concept that haru eventually discovers he's The Natori of the bureau only by a process of elimination lmao
my old idea for him has always been that before he came across baron and the bureau, he was rather aimless for a creation. he'd lived quite a long time and seen and experienced so much that it was all beginning to meld together, and he eventually lost sense of his purpose. he'd been searching for a long time (without realizing it) for something that felt bigger, and the bureau ended up being just the ticket

You deserve to enjoy your writing as much (at least! if not more!) as your readers do! You are your own first reader, after all, and hopefully you are writing what you want to read!
;o; thank you so much for the reassurance! tbh sometimes i reread something i'm writing and just wonder if it sounds pretentious, or like i'm too in love with my own Style or something. i feel like i worry that a lot, tho, and outside of one anonymous occurrence, no one's ever said as much thinking emoji
probably like a lot of times i'm just overthinking aha lies down
@catsafari25 replied to your post “also i do very much think this is part of the...”:
Half his job is wrangling the Cat King's eccentricities, but even half still leaves the king with a lot of nonsense, and I don't think ppl realise just how much more chaotic the king would be otherwise
The other half of his job is actually running the kingdom, which ppl either assume the cat king is doing, or have no idea that it is a job (they just assume the kingdom just works)
Natori is literally the “why did you cut all the sleeves off your shirts?” “Natori’s 50% of my impulse control” meme but for the king and the kingdom
jfjifeau yes! i know i bring up my job probably Too Often but it does remind me of the front desk lady getting a glimpse of my screen the other day and getting a very brief rundown of some of the things me and the other 'back office' lady do in order to schedule new patients and she was just like 'i didn't even know any of us had to do all that' lmao
i do like the idea that the kingdom occasionally gets a Glimpsing Reminder that the whole thing is being held together by a shoe string and natori frantically retying it whenever he happens upon it, tho. he comes down with the flu or is otherwise put out of commission, or in the earlier days goes home briefly, and the whole place just falls apart. and there'd maybe be a short period of time where everyone suitably Comprehends just what's going on behind the scenes
but it will inevitably fade back into obscurity again. natori is very good at fading into the background when he wants to smh
@catsafari25: Tbf i dont think hes capable of not slouching
fhfei i mean, that’s true probably
probably i’m just in the mood to draw the cat king and my brain defaults to something IC with fun shapes, if that makes sense laughs
@catsafari25: Honestly same, I'm just reblogging old posts atm until my brain fires up again
i was kinda doing that too-- went and browsed through some of the old answers on my dusty ask blog lmao i didn’t reblog anything tho thinking emoji i’ve been poking at older fic ideas and WIPs but nothing’s really got me super Motivated rip
