I’m so deeply upset by how much Cats (2019) messed up the characterisation and performance of the characters and the show itself.

Cats is one of my favourite shows of all time, and a massive part of that comes from the overwhelming whimsy and playfulness of the entire thing. The movie took such a magical, dreamy show and turned it into a corporate nightmare.

Rebel Wilson and James Corden are some of the worst casting choices I have ever seen in a movie adaptation. Playing such genuine roles for gags took all the life and respect from them.

I have many many more things to say but to keep it brief, they have sucked the life, joy, and whimsical fun out of a show built purely on those three concepts.

jon archivist sims doesn’t engage with musical theatre but he has been audience to many a heated debate between martin and tim and sasha. martin and tim are both sondheim stans and sasha thinks webber is fun. martin is the kind of gay who can’t properly appreciate camp, especially bad camp, because he’s just too profoundly earnest, but he’s not judgmental about it, he just doesn’t see the appeal of webber’s style. tim was a big fan of musicals as a kid but he kind of grew out of it and of course now he won’t step foot inside a theatre but he still has opinions. he likes things that are a bit goofy sometimes, he can have a good time with campy media, but he straight up cannot stand webber. gets all intellectual about it, says things like “camp isn’t just nonsense for its own sake” “it can be silly and flamboyant, but theatre is meant to have heart” and then when he gets more heated about it “webber is a clown, sasha, and what’s more, he’s not even a good clown, he’s a two-bit second-rate bozo” and sasha is simply thrilled to be having this conversation, because the defining characteristic of a webber stan is the absolute delight in chaos and misery.
