I got my wisdom teeth removed on Wednesday. Been playing Pokemon Legends Z-A every since. I wanna draw stuff based on my experience so far and my interpretations on my character and team.
I like to think this is the same guy I played in Pokemon Moon that decided island life wasn't for him and moved away. Guy who loved his incineroar dearly: I wonder why this tepig feels so familiar?
The guy might not be a guy actually. I wanted a male rival and I have dressed to look like a cool dark/fire type trainer. I feel like a badass with my titan sized galade though so I think it was worth it!
Are there any specific colours or tones that you like to use a lot in your art? If not, what's an art piece you did recently where you really like the colour palette?
I tend to avoid pure colors, as in the sliding scales used for colors tend to avoid 100% and 0%s wherever possible. This also applies to my line art, which tends to be a dark color without being completely black.
(on the left is a progress shot of a current wip for GWE, on the right is an oc of mine named Stick)
I'm not sure about specific color palletes, but I do try to have drawing trend towards one color or another, usually decided with the line art color and whatever background color I decide to use for that canvas.
(Left is concept art for an au Fuyu and I are making together named Painted Alleys, right is an old progress shot of a scene I was drawing involving my oc Dani Demon)
Another example of my methods; the way I color eyes is by taking whatever the main eye color is and setting the brightness to 95% (because I aim for 5% thresholds for consistency) which I think is to make their eyes feel more solid? It also means lighting can still add highlights since it's not pure blinding white.
(Left is a close up of an older drawing of Victor (another oc), and right is a piece of an old and abandoned wip with the Twilight Town gang in the Mario galaxy setting)
Same applies to shadows on dark colors. Black clothes get to be a tad bit lighter than the line art but with their color toned way back. Of course, sometimes I color things darker than the line art for emphasis, like showing something as ethereal or darker than what should be possible given the lighting, or even just to keep the characters figures visible in extremely dark scenes.
(left is a snippet of a wip I submitted the line art of to GWE this year, right is a piece of a recent doodling page meant to share Sora concepts (didn’t share this part yet cuz I wanted some positive moments alongside the dark ones))
Recently I’ve been doing Green With Envy stuff so anything I’d finished color-wise would be shared here anyway. Only things I haven’t shared here would be unfinished things unfortunately, hence why my examples have been snippets and old art. Only other things that could be considered finished would be like the Painted Alleys concept art stuff, in which it’s either meant to be part of a bigger project or it’s an inside joke type thing that didn’t seem fit to share here at the time.
This was really long winded, sorry bout that. But I hope this helps answer your curiosity or provides inspiration or something. Looking through images I guess I tend towards cool tones a lot, especially with DP stuff, but I do play with colors all over the spectrum! They’re just more pastel and muted to reduce eye strain and potential headaches.
Sometimes when experiencing media of all kinds I end up thinking about crossover scenarios CONSTANTLY. The worst of it is when I think about how my own ocs would interact with the world or how characters would interact with those ocs. But enough about original characters, I'm here to share some thoughts I had about the gummi crew!
So for anyone that follows my main blog or knows me personally, you'll know I've been thinking about "Tales Of Symphonia: Dawn Of The New World" again! Obviously I have thought about KH crossovers before and several years ago I tried drawing Emil and Roxas together, however I haven't shared that one because I'm not so proud of how it turned out. When it comes to the Runaway City AU (as I'm tentatively calling it) I keep thinking about what worlds Roxas and co could visit for both thematic narrative purposes and for moving them along on their journeys, be it personal character growth or a step towards finding Sora! Unfortunately, I have a very obvious type when it comes to characters I like, and Emil has a very similar story to what Roxas is going through in this au...
Anyway I want to share a late game idea I had with Emil before I forget, but I can't exactly draw anything for it yet as I haven't shared enough context behind it! Spoilers ahead:
Anyone aware of Dawn would probably know about Ratatosk's Ain Soph Aur, and may or may not know you can use it in regular combat upon using Devil's Hellfire. Well, the idea is that Roxas would've met them on a first visit late enough in Emil's journey to be able to see this for himself, but early enough that the whole truth behind Ratatosk hasn't been revealed yet. After finding Sora, I had the idea that Roxas doesn't immediately remerge with him and instead Sora joins the crew as they try to find a way to allow both Sora and Roxas to live as themselves, hence the heartless Sora designs I'd shared! But, this leaves a chance for Sora to tag along on a second visit >:3
On the second visit, enough time would have passed for Emil to learn the truth about who and what he is, and subsequently seal his other half away in his heart. Emil is dealing with a lot, but so are Sora and Roxas, so they talk and confide in each other and try to give support and condolences. In the base game, Emil cannot use Ain Soph Aur after Ratatosk is sealed away, but he still has Ratatosk's power as he is a part of him. This probably comes up in conversation with Roxas even!
Now for the fun part!
If they'd been talking things through in room at an inn for example, then someone would have to come by to tell Sora an Roxas it's time to go. Danny is the one to fetch them, but while he's there he shows great respect and honor towards Tenebrae who immediately comments upon Danny's formality.
"Of course I'd respect you! Your job is one of the most important of them all. After all, it's only in darkness that stars shine the brightest!"
Now that may not be as nice to Tenebrae as poor Phantom had expected, but it does stick in the minds of Emil, Sora, and Roxas! While Sora is reminded of Riku by the statement, Roxas begins to think deeper. Sora is seen as a beacon of hope to the people that sent him on this quest in the first place, and yet he's so full of darkness that he becomes a shadow when he's feeling too emotional and high-strung. But even Roxas can see just how brilliantly he shines, while Roxas himself has no light or dark or his own. This would be a catalyst to Roxas deciding once and for all that he'll save Sora, even if it means sacrificing himself. Sora wouldn't like that; why would someone so set on living suddenly decide to sacrifice himself, and for HIM specifically? Roxas goes to bed, but Sora leaves the ship to make sure he has no chance of recombining in his sleep, and so he goes to Emil to talk!
Emil has taken the experience to think about his own plans, and from talking to Sora and Roxas he recognizes that there may be another way to go about things. Emil is Emil, but he is also Ratatosk, and while Emil doesn't want to let Ratatosk end all life in Aselia, he may not have to give Ratatosk the chance at all! I don't remember the exact conversation I had imagined, but Sora also comes away with the reassurance that Roxas wants to help him and he should respect his decision and accept the gift he's being given. And since Emil/Ratatosk is a summon spirit, he tells Sora to call him if he ever needs help, granting Sora yet another summon.
This is all to lead up to Emil relearning Ain Soph Aur and making it his own: Sora summons Emil into battle for the first time later to find Emil prepares an attack with "Darkness Empowers, Ain Soph Aur!" Sora is a bit confused about the first part, but internally Roxas is filled with glee and pride for Emil being able to accept himself and his power as his own!
I was originally planning for Sora to get involved in the Runaway City au officially fairly late in, seeing as finding Sora is the whole point of Roxas' adventure, but unfortunately I've been craving more Heartless Sora content the past few days. I was already thinking of sharing the crew's adventures out of order, but even if I told the story nonlinearly or had random shenanigans comics with miscellaneous time frames or as hypotheticals, I think it'd get confusing.
So the other night I had an idea: I'll just let Sora breach containment! I already had the idea to start things off with the reason for THIS au on why exactly Roxas is on this adventure at all; Sora woke up just fine but turned out to be too Heartlessy and got put back in the machine, and I figured it could tide me over to have bits here and there where he woke up for a bit before getting caught and knocked out again! However that night I decided it'd be way funnier if, one of those times, Sora actually manages to escape Castle Oblivion entirely. Can you imagine the shenanigans already? Hell, he could get his new outfit on his own or with different friends then! He doesn't have to get it with Roxas anymore!
So anyway, if anyone has opinions or recommendations I'd love to hear them, and if you have a preference on how the timeline could go down I'd like to hear it too! For now I'm gonna finish the bday thing even thought it's like 2 weeks late now XD
Actually the wait might be longer; I'm participating in this year's Green With Envy event for the first time ever and yet I haven't even gotten started on the line arts... oopsies <3 Phandom friends eat your heart out I guess <3
Oh boy! If my Kingdom Hearts takes weren't messy and controversial enough to turn you away, then just you wait for the antiform design I gave Roxas XD
Some may ask "why is he a tiger?" And maybe some would ask "hey, what's with the collar?" But my current question is if I should keep the puffy pants from the original concept I made or if I should instead give him a battle skirt? Like a shogun!
I couldn't help but notice the lack of heartless sora posts. The tag is, frankly, abandoned. I have a feeling a majority of the posts with that tag are gonna be from me within a few months, and that feels ominous somehow?
Either the tag is dead for a reason and not many people are interested, or I'm single handedly keeping its pulse going at this point. Or both! Both are scary!
Guys I set up a kofi today! I'm so excited! I have to do a lot of cleaning up tho. Oh boy, this blog needs a fresh coat of paint! I haven't changed the colors or the banner in, I think, 8 years? And then while I'm at it, I can figure out how to attach the kofi widget thingy! :3 So so exciting
