“Life is too short to live it arguing and fighting and being mad at each other. He’s your brother. Get along or I’ll tie you both up together hugging for an hour outside.” Literally what my mom told us growing up. We always were butting heads, but only because he wanted everything I had growing up. 😒 I love my little brother. And now that we’re adults, I can appreciate him even more for always being there and being one of my rocks. I had a really good time hanging out these past few days, and hopefully we’ll get to have more adventures together. But look at this little treasure I found at my grandmas. I think I was 8? Got to see my grandma this past trip. Hadn’t seen her in a really long time. It was a short visit, but I still got to see her and hang out. Hopefully next time I can allot more time. The proposed border wall between Mexico and the United States threatens to cut through a ranch that has belonged to the Cavazos family for 250 years.

According to this article, the border wall may be harmful for Texas ranchers, as it would split a ranch that belonged to the Cavazos family for 250 years. According to lawyers, the family  can sign the proposed forms or refuse and face legal consequences.

This fall, our University Archives has created “Fall into Diversity: My Story,” an exhibit showcasing individuals whose stories are chronicled among our over 6,500 oral histories. For 60 years, we’ve conducted these interviews as a way of preserving people’s memories and views on a vast variety of subjects. Many of these interviews feature Texas Tech-related faculty and alumni, such as Dr. Lauro Cavazos.

Dr. Cavazos was born January 4, 1927 on the King Ranch. He earned his B.A. and M.A. at Texas Tech University and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University. Lauro taught at the Medical College of Virginia and at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, where he was also Dean from 1975 to 1980, before returning to Texas Tech in 1980 to become its tenth president. He is the first Hispanic and first graduate of the university to hold the title of president.

On September 20, 1988, he was unanimously confirmed as Secretary of Education, making him the first Hispanic to serve in the U.S. Cabinet. He continued in that position until December of 1990.
