It’s nice if I can sing along with songs. That’s why I listen more to bands with a singer than instrumental albums. One of the albums I really love to sing along with is ‘War Elephant’ by Deer Tick. The countryfolk-sound and rough voice of the frontman makes this just a very nice album to listen to.

276. The Baptist Generals - Jackleg Devotional To The Heart (Sub Pop, 2013)

The first album by the Baptist Generals I heard was No Silver/No Gold. Opening song ‘Ay Distress’ was a classic in my head. This lo-fi rough ballad that all of a sudden gets interrupted by a cellphone going of, followed by hearing how the singer is seriously pissed off by it. 

After that 2002 album, full of lo-fi folk like the scruffy brother of Neutral Milk Hotel, the Baptist Generals didn’t record anything anymore until they all of a sudden reappeared 11 years later. ‘Jackleg Devotional To The Heart’ still has this primitive feel to it - you always expect the singer to just smash his acoustic guitar - but it also shows a band that has matured: the music is richer, the songs are more developed. 

Everyone should give these guys a chance, they are really underappreciated.
