Valence is… well, a little bit skeptical about this whole “carve a pattern and get a living stone as a friend” deal. Sounds like bullcrap to her. But, a dare's a dare.
Her carving tool stops just as her focus breaks by a strong gust of wind, and she takes this time to look at her art. She decided to carve on the back of the cat statue’s neck, where kittens are held by their mothers, because the area is bigger than the forehead and because of the heart on its hind leg, not wanting to swarm that area. She might not be a full-time artist, but she was raised by one, damn it!
Her carving, an intricate, blocky upside down heart, is turning out quite great despite her non-existent skills. Once the wind dies down, she finishes one last line in her design.
Then, she removes the tools somewhere neither of them can easily reach and uses her ever-so-present anger to create a small axe. She cuts her palm, making sure to make it just deep enough for blood to flow in small trickles, and places it against the carving.
For an awkward time, nothing happens. The small smear of blood stays where it is. Nothing begins glowing and nothing comes to life. Valence is about to give it up when she realizes one last requirement. She nearly facepalms, but remembers her bloodied hand. Instead, she sighs heavily.
“A name, huh?” She ponders aloud, humming. “You kinda look like Dennis, but… no. You need something more special.” Then, the perfect, albeit bittersweet, option hits her.
That does the trick. The carving glows as its lines are filled with her blood. The stone turns lively, almost like a hippo’s skin. And until the cat statue opens its - her - eyes, Valence can do nothing but stare in awe.
Valence's dead name is Freya, so that's why it holds so much weight to her.
If I don't succeed, do post as fanwork! ^^
That was a nice read, enjoy your new stone kitty
