I have a confession to make: this was my first Day of Play event to attend. The morning that I arrived at the Darby Creek Elementary Day of Play I was very excited and had come prepared. I had watched the Caine’s Arcade video, read research articles on the importance of creativity, and was aware of the cultural significance of devoting a day just to play. Nonetheless, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, as I was after all, a Day of Play newcomer. By the end of my first Cardboard Challenge, I was filled with awe at witnessing the creative and diverse processes and products of the students of Darby Creek Elementary.
Part of my duties at the Day of Play event was to welcome participants. When I first signed students in, I asked them if they had any ideas about what they would be making today. This is when I was first struck by the diversity of student processes. I quickly noticed that some kids arrived ready to play with their first idea, while others weighed several options and leafed through a suggestion box written by fellow students. A couple of students even showed up with diagrams of plans, with scaling for size included. Even the suggestion box was highly varied with ideas ranging from from “build the empire state building” to “make a dragon with a long neck” (complete with a drawing of the long neck).
When wandering around the cardboard wonderland that just a few hours before had been an empty asphalt parking lot, I was once again inspired by the variety of the student’s ideas. I witnessed structures ranging greatly in size, from handheld to large scale. I even saw works that were mechanical, such as an airplane with a rotatable propeller. Some of the other creations I observed were: a donut shop, houses, an airplane, a Viking ship, a unicorn, a bird wing costume, “warrior princess armor”, a colorfully painted fashion show runway, a gingerbread house, helicopters, and cats and dogs.
The myriad of responses to the challenge emphasized the fact that creativity and play look different for everyone. Each participant had a unique approach to the challenge. The students all had access to the same raw materials, location, and amount of time, and each student developed an original creation. Witnessing how each student had a unique perspective and way of playing tangibly demonstrated how play supports innovation and is a conduit for creativity.
Cardboard Challenge Stories from Evening Street Elementary
Isaac: My cardboard creation is a space station. It has rocket boosters and it has a cafeteria and a pool to land in.
Samantha: I made a tower. It has a shield on the front.
Josie and Jesse: We made a fort.It has a dragon and three knites [sic].
Claire: My creation is a kitten named Meow Meow. It’s cute and has a curly tail and whiskers.
Harper: I made a space shuttle and a cat. It flies really fast and the cat is cute!
Ana, Coley and Sam: We made a candy factory. Our candies are knots!
Anna: My creation is a guitar and amp. It’s loud and I’m going to sing with it all the time.
Finn: A Tank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s a good thing to play with. It shoots and moves around. It is a great toy for boys!:)
Henry: I made a Poke ball and Master ball Gotta catch ‘em all
Griffin: My creation is candy pin ball and it has real working flippers and bumpers.
Lia: I made a school bus. I don’t get to ride the bus so I built my own.
Alexander: I had fun building my printer!
Piper: I made Piper’s Sweet Shop and there is a cash register and money. I sell Hershey’s and ice cream. I love my famous sparkle candy. I hope you come try some!
Max: I made a SW1200 I like trains.
Gunnar: I made a space base on mars. There was an alien invasion on mars!
Jack: This is my Mega Man Costume. Don’t waste your money on expensive costumes, just make one!
Michael: This is a brick house from the story “Three Little Pigs." It has the fireplace, the pot, three little pigs and the wolf.
Annie and Henry: We made a plane and city.
Ellison: I made a hot air ballon and it is cool.
Matthew: My creation is a giant 8 foot rocketship. We hope it looks really cool!
Abigail & Natalie: We made a rocketship named is “weeee”
Adrian: This is a realistic car. I tried to make it look nice, I am really happy, and I have to thank my dad.
Griffin: I made an animal ship. It can come with animals and a person.
Oscar: My castle has a game room and a working drawbridge!
Jack and Nate: We made a plane with a perpeller [sic].
Noah: I made a dragon and a sword. My dragon is...red.
Jack: This is a knight set to battle Noah Bott’s dragon.
Jessica: This is a peacock throne and it was fun to make!
Wynn: I made a basketball hoop, pen, and robot. Cardboard challenge was fun.
Elle: This is a chip/duck tape vending machine and I gave fake chips out!
Isa: I made a table and pacman. I used duct tape.
Gracelyn: I made a Candy Corn Shop and a mini drum. I had a lot of fun making things.
Jane: I made a pendulum and bracelet. I had a lot of fun making these things
Braeden: This is a solar oven. It was fun!
Kai: I made a castle. It was fun and hard!
Adeline: This is my pegasus. Her name is cookie, this was fun!
Wyatt: I built a castle. It has a spy thing on the front and on the side and door that closes.
Michael: I made a dino mask because i wanted to build it

This is a young friend from Duxbury Park Arts Impact Elementary School. I encountered him as I entered the gym-atorium to participate in the Community Cardboard Challenge at 9:10am. He simply asked me if I could help cut a couple of holes in the bottom of a box; which I did. He came back a couple of minutes later asking if I could cut the holes bigger. Again, I helped. He later came to me with an even larger box and an explanation. He was attempting to make a costume of a character (one I had never heard of). He had abandoned the previous box because he couldn’t fit his body into it. He needed the holes for his legs. I cut leg holes in the bottom of the new box as requested. He put it on and asked for arm holes. I cut where he indicated. He came back some time later with a third box and explained that he had accidentally placed the face on the wrong side of the box and wanted to start over. We cut the arm and leg holes again, cut a slit for him to see and he climbed in. He was having trouble getting in and out so I made my one and only suggestion – that he cut a large hole in the bottom for his legs that he could use to put the entire box over his head like a shirt instead of climbing in the back. We did that then he proceeded to close the back, add eyes, and otherwise modify his box. He then asked me if I could help him make arms and legs like those he had seen me work on with another student. No problem. He put on his costume, fixed a few issues, and proudly declared “I’m Regigigas!” (sure you are…whoever that is). He walked around the event in his costume showing everyone. (pictured here)
Around 11:40 am (about 20 minutes before the end of the event) he comes to me with yet a fourth box and tells me his costume fell apart and he needed my help making another one. Sure; you’ve already solved all the hard problems – let’s pound this out. Within 10 minutes he had his new costume on; the best one we had made yet.
He never wavered from his idea. Never got frustrated. Never gave up. He just kept trying, failing, prototyping, redesigning, and trying again until he had what he wanted. That is some serious perseverance – 2.5 hours’ worth! Goes to show how self-driven interests can lead children to do amazing things.
And out of curiosity I had to Google Regigigas. Turns out it’s a Pokémon. Looks like I learned something too.
