Cardboard Challenge at Home
Missed out on Columbus Community Cardboard Challenge 2016? Do you want to continue the fun at home? Cardboard is inexpensive and incredibly multipurpose, so it’s great for creative play. Here are some of our tips for how to bring the Cardboard Challenge to your home.
Getting Cardboard and Materials:
Free cardboard is really easy to collect.
Old paper towel and toilet paper towel rolls might be the easiest to find, but many grocery stores, book stores, and other retail stores will give away their old boxes on request. Furniture stores especially end up with boxes in unusual shapes and sizes.
Don’t forget about food containers and other recyclables! Cleaned recyclables can make awesome additional material to cardboard.
Box cutter (a.k.a. utility knife)
Mark making tools (sharpies and markers are cleanest, acrylic and tempera paint works well too)
What does cardboard look like when you peel back the top layer
What if you have no tape? How will you attach pieces of cardboard together?
How can you transform a box?
Make a vehicle that can travel through space and time! Where and when will you go? What kind of creatures will you see? Oh no! An asteroid field, how will you repair your ship?
Invent a new game! What will you call it? What are the rules? Ack, a tie! How will you decide who wins?
Build and Design your dream house! What kind of awesome features does it have? Where do you think you’ll spend the most time? Your (best friend, dog, favorite superhero, aunt, etc.) is moving in, what will their room look like?
