In Dec. 2017, I had an ICH stroke and as soon as I got better told myself that I now have not a day to waste in doing what I believed is my purpose in this life— community education in history and politics and literacy education for all. In March 2018 when I got my green light that my brain bleeding stopped, I joined the Colorado Black Women for Political Action. This is the most empowering organization I have ever been apart of and have been involved with outstanding community projects and have met amazing politicians and pundits. I was elected to join the board in Nov. 2019 and have enjoyed amazing community education opportunities, such as bringing the incomparable theorist and founder of Africana Womanism Dr. Clenora Hudson-Weems who was the first academic to establish Emmett Till’s murder as the official beginning of the civil rights movement in 1985. After CBWPA hosted that event, Dr. Hudson-Weems kept in touch with me and asked me to pen a poem for her Africana Studies textbook that released August 31, 2021! My poem “For My People” was featured in the textbook which is the premiere textbook in colleges for Africana Studies. Well, today, I was awarded the President’s Award for Outstanding Board Member by our president who I am so thankful to have been able to serve Tamra McGarity DeBrady who is one of the most magical women I’ve ever met. I’m proud and humbled to be apart of this powerful organization. #CBWPA https://www.instagram.com/p/CU08I8oJiuj/?utm_medium=tumblr
