Mind shut his eyes and slid down, resting on the ground and leaning his head against the wall behind him. It’d been a rough night; Soul had gotten blind drunk and made a mess of the house, leaving Mind to clean it all up and Heart to help him get to bed. A temporary, ice-thin truce had been called as Mind helped Heart drag a babbling Soul into his room.
“I’ll clean, you get him to sleep.” Mind had muttered, avoiding looking directly at him.
“Okay.”
Now there was nothing to be done but get to bed himself. Mind wasn’t a big fan of sleep, but he had to admit he was exhausted.
Standing back up with the counter in front of him for support, Mind started to walk to his bedroom when he saw Heart finally come out of Soul’s room.
He looked… irritated. As if he was mad at Mind for making him take care of Soul, or for getting him drunk, which he most definitely did not encourage.
He watched, silent, as Heart stumbled into his room and shut the door behind him.
“He better not be blaming me for this,” Mind thought, pursing his lips and slipping into his room.
His crown had begun to rest atop his head rather than float above it, one of the physical signs of Mind’s mental state, this time signifying to all the world that Mind was tired. He reached up and gently picked it up, shuffling over to his bed and setting it on a pillow.
His drumstick necklace came off next, the one he wore daily despite knowing its origin. He hung it on a hook above his desk before switching his clothes out for pajamas.
He was ready to collapse when he was stopped by a sticky note hanging tauntingly over his bed, where the words “IRON SUPPLEMENTS!!” was written in all caps.
Groaning and cursing his past self for writing that, he stepped out of his room and shambled to the kitchen slowly.
“Fucking bitchy stupid iron deficiency dumbass,” he muttered sourly, roughly flinging open a cupboard and yanking out his bottle of supplements. He unscrewed the cap and shook out a single blueish pill, staring at it blankly and blinking slowly.
“Oh, right.” He thought, turning around and flinging open another cupboard to get a cup. “Water.”
“Why are you being so loud, idiot?” Heart’s voice called out, making Mind jump and nearly drop his glass. “You’re gonna wake Atlas.”
Mind turned and stared at him, who was settled on the couch with a book in his hands and a blanket wrapped around his shoulders. His face was turned towards the kitchen, though not quite in Mind’s exact direction.
“Sorry.” Mind huffed, turning on the tap and sticking the cup under.
“Are you taking your pills?” Heart asked, his voice still laced with spikes but his question genuine.
“Mm-hm.” Mind hummed, scowling protectively at Heart as he threw the pill in his mouth and washed it down with a sip of water. “What’s it to you?”
Heart turned his face back towards their bedroom doors and he resumed running his fingers over the paper, reading the Braille as well, if not better, as Mind could when reading printed letters.
“Hm.” Mind thought, opening their dishwasher and setting the glass inside before putting away his medications and leaving the kitchen.
“You going to bed?” Heart questioned just as Mind’s fingertips brushed against the bedroom doorknob.
Mind hesitated. He had to admit, being startled by Heart had jolted him more awake. He did, after all, have somewhat somniphobia.
“…No.” He finally responded slowly, his tone even. “I’m going to stay up.”
Heart seemed to perk up just a bit, as if the potential at being accompanied by Mind whist reading was somehow appealing to him. “Oh, well. You could, you could grab a book. And, like, read. With me. If you want.”
Mind blinked. “What the hell?” He thought suspiciously. One moment Heart was radiating hatred and the next he’s inviting him to read with him? “He’s so stupidly emotional.”
“Hm. Okay.” Mind mumbled, entering his room and returning moments later with a thick textbook in his arms.
He stepped around their small, ankle-hazard coffee table and climbed onto their big rocking chair, bringing his legs up to a criss cross and setting his book on his lap.
He had only barely begun to read when Heart introduced another question. “What’re you reading?” His voice was more casual now, less armed, as if he was making a conscious effort to be affable.
“A, uh. A botany. Textbook.” Mind replied choppily.
“Mm,” Heart turned a page of his own book. “Studying up for your, uh, rose garden?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Cool, cool. Okay.”
The air between them was silent and tense for a spell, with only the repetitive flutter of pages turning and occasional sniff or shuffle to fill the quiet. It was almost nice, being able to just sit in each other’s presence. If it wasn’t for the looming feeling that this was all wrong, they would’ve enjoyed it. Enjoyed the still, the rare peace.
“Do you think it’s our fault?” Heart said gently after a quarter of an hour or so.
“Hm? For what?” Mind replied without looking up, only half engaged in the question.
“For, you know. Soul’s addiction and stuff.” Heart elaborated with a guilty sigh. “I feel like it’s our fault.”
Mind closed his book and turned his gaze to Heart, who was curled up in the corner of the couch with his Braille book set beside him. He looked vulnerable, which wasn’t anything new. Mind decided not to trust it. Not yet.
“It was his decision to take it up,” Mind readjusted his position in the rocking chair and set his chin in his left palm. “That’s not really our fault.”
Heart turned onto his stomach and set his head on the side of the couch. “But he wouldn’t have started if we weren’t fighting all the time. It’s always our fault. We’re the worst, and we cause all his problems.”
Mind wasn’t sure what to say, because Heart was exactly right. It was always their fault, it was always them who drove Soul through the wall, always, every time. Every issue Soul had to deal with was because of them.
“Yeah.” He finally muttered, closing his book and reaching over to set it on the coffee table.
Moving without thinking, he slid off the chair and walked over to where Heart was lying on the couch. He peeled Heart’s blanket off of him and sandwiched himself in between the back of the couch and Heart’s back before pulling the blanket back over the both of them.
“What are you doing?” Heart whispered, shifting himself until he was face to face with Mind.
“I dunno.” Mind admitted. “I’m tired.”
“Me too.” Heart said quietly, reaching out with his hand to feel Mind’s shoulder. “Can I feel your face?”
Mind made a confused sound. “Why?”
“So I can remember it,” Heart explained. “I feel Soul’s every day so I don’t forget, but I haven’t felt yours even once.”
Mind stiffened slightly and sighed. “Sure, okay.” He was already snuggled up beside him, anyway.
Heart smiled and moved his hand to feel Mind’s face, running it over his forehead and rubbing his thumb over the cable running behind his ear that connected to his mechanical voicebox.
“I did that to you, huh?” He muttered, setting his hand back at his side.
“Yeah.” Mind’s eyes focused on Heart’s blindfold, and he reached out to touch it lightly. “And Soul did that to you, with my encouragement.”
“Yeah.” Heart moved to take off his blindfold, letting Mind see his scarred eyes for the first time since he’d gotten the blindfold. “Do they look bad?”
“Yeah, they look like shit.”
Heart laughed and dropped the blindfold on the floor. “I’m sorry I tried to kill you.” He apologized with a lopsided smile.
Mind’s eyebrows raised. We wasn’t expecting an apology, not tonight, not ever. But here Heart was, smiling and handing out a sorry as if it were nothing.
“I’m… sorry that I tried to cut you out.” Mind reciprocated slowly.
“Friends?” Heart whispered, his wings fluttering softly behind him.
“Yeah. Friends.” Mind agreed, pulling the blanket tighter around them. “But I’m tired.”
Heart laughed through his nose and snuggled up to him. “Yeah, me too.”
It takes its first breath, rending out of flesh, a concept half-realized clawing from the head of its source. It spills across the floor, covered in its creator's blood, which rapidly cools into a vivid, noble shade of blue. Every breath comes ragged and painful as it takes in oxygen, its surroundings coming into vision as it sits up. Its own head pulses with almost-blinding pain, and its chest—
—is empty.

Chapter 1
He sat with his back pressed to the wall, one hand gripping his sheets and the other entangled in his hair. He could hear Heart sniffling from the other side of the wall, letting out a quiet moan every now and then. Soul had practically disappeared, and neither he nor Heart had seen him for hours.
He didn’t understand why they weren’t Whole. The warmth had enveloped them, he’d felt it hum beneath his skin—and then, silence. Did they do something wrong?
Soul had been so cheerful, so excited to finally be at rest. Mind had smiled at Heart, ruffled his hair, and then taken Soul’s hand, ready to achieve Harmonia. Instead they’d just stood there. Nothing happened. At least, nothing happened to Mind and Heart, but the light in Soul’s eyes had dimmed and his shoulders slumped before letting go of their hands and walking away without a word.
Quietly, he untangled his fingers from his sheets and hair and slid off his bed, unfurling his wings and giving them a quick shake before tucking them neatly behind his back again. It wasn’t like a shake was necessary, not like it was for Heart, but it still felt good to stretch them out a bit.
He stepped out into the hallway and sighed before stopping in front of Heart’s door. “Heart.” He said curtly, rapping on the wood with his knuckles.
He heard a shuffle and a crash before Heart opened the door a crack, sticking his foot out and feeling around until it met with Mind’s.
“What do you want?” He asked brokenly, tapping his foot against Mind’s.
Mind blinked slowly. What did he want? He hadn’t even thought that far, which was odd for him.
“Do you need help preening?” He asked instead of whatever he had originally planned.
Heart’s mouth twisted in a confused scowl. “Why do you ask?”
Mind crossed his arms. “Well, fine, if you’re too emotional to let me help you then I guess I’ll just go awa-“
“No,” Heart interrupted him. “No.” He opened the door wider to reveal his bedroom, scattered with feathers and disarrayed objects. “You can help.”
Heart turned around, feeling each step ahead of him with his foot until he collapsed on a plush purple beanbag chair. With a flourish, he outstretched his wings and let them rest hanging unfurled.
Mind pulled up a chair behind Heart and began running his fingers through his feathered, tangible wings, reconnecting the separated barbules and gently repositioning most of his plumage.
“Have you seen Soul?” Heart asked quietly as Mind worked.
“No.” Mind answered tersely, furtively admiring how sturdy and elegant Heart’s wings were. “I don’t know where he went.”
Heart was silent for a spell. “Should we try and find him?”
Mind sighed through his nose and shrugged. “I don’t know. Maybe if we start fighting again he’ll somehow sense it and reappear as usual.”
Heart chuckled softly, raising an eyebrow at Mind’s subtle jest, a joke only Heart and him would ever understand. “Hm, so the automaton does have a sense of humor after all?”
Mind blushed and plucked one of Heart’s feathers, making him let out a small yipe. “Shut up or I will start fighting with you.”
Heart fluttered his pricked wing and frowned. “Okay, okay. Whatever, freak. Geez.”
They didn’t speak for another twenty minutes, Heart escaping into his imagination and Mind escaping into his thoughts. He knew that if Soul didn’t return by the end of the day, he wouldn’t be able to search for him by night, and they would have to wait until the next day to go looking for him. Neither of them wanted to spend the night in a house without Soul to protect them.
“I think we should go look for him.” Mind said finally, after some mental debate.
“Hm?” Heart hummed, turning slightly. “What did you say?”
“I said,” Mind repeated, slightly irritated, “that I think we should go look for Soul. Before it gets dark.”
Heart looked confused. “But… why before it gets dark?”
Mind pursed his lips, finishing on the last section of feathers. “Because I don’t want to search for him at night, that’s why.”
Heart gave his wings a final shake before tucking them behind his back and shrugging. “Alright, I guess.”
Mind stood up and walked to the door, turning around to look at Heart. “Do you need help walking?” He asked, almost skeptically.
“No.” Heart said stubbornly, feeling around with his feet again. “I can walk by myself. I’m not a baby.”
With an inevitable crash, Heart tripped over his own feet and went tumbling into his trash can.
“But you’re blind.” Mind said frankly, continuing the conversation as he begrudgingly helped Heart to his feet. “Grab my shirt at least, for heaven’s sake.”
Mumbling, Heart clenched around a fistful of Mind’s black t-shirt, following along as Mind lead him through the house and outside.
“Can you fly without needing to see?” Mind questioned.
“Yes, obviously.”
Heart outstretched his wings and within a few flaps he was off the ground, waiting for Mind to join him in the air.
“Hurry up, slowpoke.” Heart taunted from above. “The day’s a-wasting.”
Mind scowled and took a few steps back, slowly unfurling his shining pinions until they were at his full wingspan. He slowly got down into a crouch before taking a deep breath and starting to run, focusing all his energy on propelling himself forward.
His wings weren’t like Heart’s— they required focus, precision, and a running start, whereas Heart could simply flap his wings and be in the air before you could say “Soul’s trident”.
“What’s taking you so long?” Heart called down to where he assumed Mind was. “Are you… running?”
Mind huffed in irritation, beating his wings and finally taking to the air and gliding towards Heart.
“Let’s go, femboy.”
Heart’s mouth twisted into a flustered frown. “Don’t call me that, motherfucker.”
“Shut up.”
“I will not. I will continue to talk and talk as long as I wish because I was blinded not muted. And frankly the ability to talk is a much more valuable asset than the ability to see in my opinion, as a blind person who used to be able to see—“
Mind tuned out Heart’s obnoxious rambling at that point, scanning the ground below him for any sign of where Soul could’ve gone. Heart followed along close behind him as he talked, partially lead by the warmth that emitted from Mind’s wings and partially led by his instinctive sense of direction when in flight.
“So I threw them all away, because it’s just gross. I don’t want Darrell’s feet on my pillow, y’know?”
Mind stopped and spun around, grabbing Heart’s cheeks and squeezing them to get him to stop talking. “Dang, I forgot about Darrell.” He said, letting go of Heart’s mouth.
Heart reached up and massaged his jaw. “What about him?”
Mind gave Heart a side eye even though he couldn’t see it. “Someone has to stay behind and take care of him.”
Heart snorted and shook his head. “Good one. C’mon, let’s keep going.” He started to fly forward again when Mind swooped ahead of him and blocked his path.
“I’m serious, Heart.” He ran a hand through his blueish-brown hair. “If anything happens to that fowl, Soul will be crushed.”
Heart furrowed his brow and felt around the air until he was touching Mind’s shoulder. “Calm down, the chicken will survive. We’ll be back before nightfall anyway, right? And it’s not like there’s a predator waiting to eat him or something.”
Mind sighed and moved away from Heart’s hand. “I suppose. But if we don’t find Soul tonight, tomorrow I’m going out alone and you’re staying behind.”
Heart didn’t agree to this arrangement, but he didn’t argue against it either. Rather, he shrugged as if to say, “We’ll see.”
After a mile or so of gliding through the sky, Mind directed Heart to descend into the foliage below them. Heart flew down easily, fluttering his wings gently to keep his pace. Mind followed suit, but with a different approach. He waited for Heart to touch land before tipping forward until his nose was parallel with the ground, folding his wings around himself and diving face-first into the trees. He navigated his way through the tall branches skillfully, then unfolded his wings at the last moment as if they were a parachute.
“Fancy.” Heart commented, feeling the vibrations from Mind’s wings untucking so quickly.
Mind rolled his eyes, not taking the compliment as genuine. “Grab my shirt. I want to check this one spot.”
Heart stepped forward and grabbed another fistful of fabric. “You know you haven’t really listened to any of my ideas so far.” He complained as they stumbled across the forest floor.
Mind made an indignant sound through his nose. “You haven’t pitched any ideas, prokaryote.”
Heart’s mouth fell open in defiance. “One, yes I have you just weren’t paying attention when I was telling you stories and two, I don’t know what that means but I am very offended.”
Mind turned and stared at him.
“You don’t know what prokaryote means?”
“Nope.”
Mind sighed and rubbed at his forehead. “How are we a part of the same Whole?”
“I dunno. Magic?”
“You believe in magic?”
“No.”
“Then why would you say that?”
“I don’t know man, I just say stuff sometimes.”
Mind let out another heavy sigh and turned back around, continuing their trek through the undergrowth. He felt like he must have lost brain cells in that conversation.
“Where are we going, anyway?” Heart asked after a while, having a bit of a hard time keeping up with Mind’s brisk pace.
“Your hole.” Mind explained flatly, pushing aside low-hanging branches and stepping over overgrown roots. “It’s the only significant place out here.”
Heart tensed slightly. “Hm.” He hummed, letting go of Mind’s shirt and slowing down. “Y’know what how about you go do that and I’ll stay here, ‘k?”
Mind almost laughed at Heart’s absurdity. “Alright, you can stay here alone in a heart of the woods, blind boy. See you later.” He started to walk away, waiting for Heart to change his mind.
“Wait, no, don’t leave me alone in the woods!” Heart called frantically once Mind was a fair distance away. “Wait for me! Please don’t leave me!”
Heart hurried to catch up to his obligatory companion, tripping almost every few steps but not stopping until he crashed into Mind’s back, sending them both tumbling to the ground in a heap of feathers and fabric.
Mind lay still for a moment, staring up at the sky as Heart lay atop his anterior. He opened his mouth to tell him off, but no sound came out.
“What the hell?!” Mind mouthed, sitting up quickly as his hands shot up to his throat. “Damn! Damn it all the fucking hell!”
His breathing quickened and his heartbeat pounded in his chest, the sound ringing in his ears as his eyesight grew foggy and spotted. He felt as his he might throw up, or pass out, or both, so he shut his eyes and tried to control his breath.
Heart blinked at him, his face now in Mind’s lap. “I can’t understand what you’re trying to say, bro.”
“No shit, Sherlock!” Mind mouthed again, scowling down at him. “Get the fuck off me!”
Heart just stared at him awkwardly. “What.”
Mind huffed angrily through his nose and pushed Heart out of his lap. Taking a deep breath to calm himself down, he unclasped the hand that had been cradling his throat and grabbed Heart’s hand, directing it to feel the mechanical larynx installed there.
Heart gasped quietly, realization and guilt dawning in his eyes. Sitting up on his knees, he brushed himself off quickly and began to inspect the potential damage he may have caused with his fingers.
“How does it work?” He asked, eyebrows knitted together in worry and confusion. “Soul wouldn’t, y’know, let me in when he was… fixing you up and everything, so I don’t really know… what to do.”
Mind shut his eyes and mouthed a slur of colorful words before taking Heart’s hand in his again and bringing it up and behind his ear, where he could feel the rupture was.
“Oh, this feels kind of cracked or something,” Heart commented, feeling around the hidden panel. “Wait, no. I think it’s just displaced?” He paused, thinking for a moment. “Do you want me try and fix it?”
Mind nodded. “Obviously, you idiot.” He thought, eyes narrowed at his blind nurse.
Heart repositioned himself on the forest floor, breathing in through his nose before cautiously and gently pressing what felt like a nodule of some sort back into what must’ve been its proper place. A sharp click confirmed that it was, in fact, back in place, and Heart sighed in relief as a smile turned up his lips.
“There!” He chirped, setting his hands in his lap. “Can you talk now?”
“Let me try. Garden. Doritos. Black coffee.” Mind started naming off things that he liked, wanting to test his voice as much as possible before seeming whether or not Heart was successful in repairing him.
“You sound good.” Heart said, giving him a thumb’s up. “You wanna go now?”
Mind stood up slowly, brushing himself off and nodding. “Let’s.”
They continued on, and Heart reached out to grab Mind’s shirt again, his fingers clasping around the hem of his sleeve. He moved his hand down Mind’s arm until it reached his hand, taking it in his in an attempt to help make him feel better.
“Damn, why are your hands so weirdly warm?” Mind criticized, ripping his palm away from Heart.
“Well, I’m sorry.” Heart replied, grabbing back onto Mind’s sleeve. “I didn’t realize you were so heat sensitive.” His tone was sour, as if Mind refusing to hold his hand had left a bad taste on his tongue.
“I’m not,” Mind clarified, directing Heart around a large bush. “I’m just not used to it is all.”
“Did you have a panic attack?” Heart blurted, stumbling over a root. “It sounded like you were.”
Mind didn’t respond, his expression made of stone. “We’re almost there, I can see it.”
They made their way past a few fallen logs and thorny bushes, finally stopping at the gaping mouth of the hole that was intended to be Mind’s final home.
“Are we here?” Heart whispered, taking a small step back.
“Yes.” Mind leaned forward, eyes scanning each inch of the now-overgrown pit before heaving a sigh and running a hand over his face. “He isn’t here.”
Idk if I should put a warning for this but like just beware for my Mind interp being my Mind interp.
Another fanfiction! Yay! This is actually a rewrite of one of my old ones, so like, epic 🔥
I bring you,
Affirmations
A repetitive beep... beep... beep... cut through the peaceful quiet of Mind's bedroom.
Mind turned in his bed, rolling over with an odd sounding groan. He felt exhausted. Heart's sobs had kept him up all night, and Soul wouldn't do anything about it.
Mind inhaled deeply as he sat up. He dreaded what he'd see in the mirror. Messy hair, pale skin, and dark shadows under his eyes, all undoubtedly Heart features. Features Mind wanted no part of.
"Alexa, dismiss the alarm." He grumbled. The virtual assistant parroted his command back as it complied. It was certainly one of his rooms' better features, saved him the torture of menial tasks such as turning off his alarm manually, or writing lists. And it didn't argue with him.
Mind yawned as the alarm stopped, then climbed out of bed. The first thing on his to-do list was to examine the damage a night without sleep had caused. Maybe he was being a little dramatic, but part of maintaining control is control over yourself. And if you don't have that, then you have nothing.
His feet sounded across the floor as he walked to his vanity. He caught his own eye in the mirror. Just as he dreaded. No concealer could cover that up.
Mind slumped into the seat and ran his finger through his hair. "Harmonia have mercy..." He was going to murder Heart.
Unfortunately, one bad night wasn't equal to sleeping in all day, as if he'd be able to. No, he wasn't Soul or Heart. He had responsibilities and tasks that needed done.
He opened the drawer of the vanity and selected his make-up. The foundation was a sickly colour, something Heart had to mix specially for him on account of his greyish pallor.
In Heart's words, "You look like someone who died of suffocation." Mind always quiped, "No doubt at your hands."
Mind applied his make-up with great care. He preferred a more 'natural' look. As natural as you could look with pure white eyes and blueish skin. He did begrudge himself some eyeliner and his signature shade of blue lipstick, though. It tied his look together.
Gazing in the mirror now, he still noticed the eye bags. He was quite certain the only way to vanish those would be to cut them out. But that was just him overexaggerating.
Mind ran his fingers through his black curls again, forcing them to stay out of his face, as he preferred them. He'd always took great pride in his appearance, hence having a vanity. He was as vain as it may suggest. Or, rather, as Heart would suggest.
Mind always thought he was incorrect. Heart and Soul simply didn't wash often enough, or give a fuck about how they looked. Of course he'd look egocentric in comparison.
Mind's bitter musings continued as he applied hairspray to keep his hair as he liked it.
It irritated him, really. They both teased him for all the products he used.
Moisturisers for his skin, as he struggled with its dryness, especially around his joints.
Serums for his hair in hopes it'd magically start being more like Heart's. He was always jealous of how naturally thick it was, in comparison to his own, thinner hair. He was yet to decide if it was due to stress, genetics, or trichotillomania.
It was always a source of jealousy and insecurity on Mind's end. Heart had so many beautiful things, and yet he neglected them, allowed them to fall into disrepair. He was complacent and lazy, and Mind refused to end up like him, tease as they may.
Mind gazed into the mirror, finally recognising who stared back. It was an appearance he could bear to live with.
Mind pushed away from the vanity but paused halfway up from his seat. He'd, embarrassingly, almost forgotten a step. It was new, not that it excused his forgetfulness. How humiliating.
If Heart or Soul were to ever find out he was sure his reputation would never recover, but he'd been trying positive affirmations. Little compliments to try bridge the growing chasm between him and his reflection.
Mind didn't feel as though it helped. If compliments fixed things then he wouldn't be where he is. Then fixing the rift between himself and Heart, even Soul, wouldn't reap so much anguish.
Reluctantly, he sat down again, staring back at himself. It just felt embarrassing. First, to compliment himself, and second to actually struggle to do so. Would Heart struggle this much to think of one nice thing to say about himself?
Mind reached for the book he'd found the habit in and thumbed through it till he found his bookmark. He was yet to notice a difference in his lack of connection, then again, it was supposed to take time. It wasn't a miracle cure.
He stared down at the first affirmation, then looked back to his mirror.
"I can do anything I set my mind to." A small smile formed on his lips.
"I've let go of limiting beliefs and choose to trust myself. If only Heart could follow my lead."
Mind glanced back down at the book, "All I need to succeed is within me." He turned his gaze back to the mirror. "I am enough, and I value myself." With a snap, the book was closed and returned to its spot on the vanity. His previous smile faded.
He was sure they'd never work. They were just... lies. Kind lies you'd tell a child after they'd failed miserably at whatever pursuit they'd attempted. Lies Soul would comfort Heart with. Lies Heart fell for. Hook, line and sinker.
Mind could endure the growing disconnect between him and himself. He didn't need something as petty as a reflection anyway. It was just another lie. He knew the truth. And the truth was that he was only feeling better and better. It didn't matter how he looked. Looks are shallow and deceiving anyways.
They were a test of his patience, and they didn't work, and that was final.
