The modern ruff? Or severe head lopping jewellery 😈 The ruff was worn by Western European men, women and children, in mid 16-1700's. It evolved from the small fabric ruffle at the drawstring neck of the shirt or chemise. They served as changeable pieces of cloth that could themselves be laundered separately while keeping the wearer's doublet or gown from becoming soiled at the neckline. The stiffness of the garment forced upright posture, and their impracticality led them to become a symbol of wealth and status.
