Warning: CCleaner Was Hacked With Malware Over 2.3 Million Users Infected
A popular PC-cleaning software used by over 130 million people put users at risk after hackers were able to insert malware into legitimate downloads.
According to Avast, around 2.27 million users had the affected software installed on 32-bit Windows machines, which was delivered via a hacked server.
The company said it has already forced updates of the affected version and in its own words was "able to disarm the threat before it was able to do any harm."
What Does the Malware Do?
The malware did not actively harm systems, but it did encrypt and collect information that could be used to harm your system in the future.
It gathers information like your IP address, computer name, a list of installed software on your computer, a list of active software and a list of network adapters and sends it to a third-party computer server.
How do I know if I have the corrupted version?
The versions that were affected are:
Users running the 32-bit version of the application (not the 64-bit version)
Users running version 5.33.6162 of CCleaner or CCleaner Cloud 1.07.3191, released on August 15th, 2017. The Android version for phones doesn't seem to be affected.
How to Remove Malware From Your PC?
Affected users are strongly recommended to update their CCleaner software to version 5.34 or higher, in order to protect their computers from being compromised. The latest version is available for download here.
