Cecily of York: The Forgotten Daughter of Edward IV

Often overshadowed by her famous siblings, Cecily of York was the third surviving daughter of King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville, born on March 20, 1469. She grew up during the final years of the Wars of the Roses, a period that saw her family rise to the English throne before suffering devastating losses. Her brothers, Edward V and Richard, Duke of York, became the legendary Princes in the Tower, while her sister Elizabeth of York married Henry VII, uniting the rival houses of York and Lancaster and founding the Tudor dynasty.

Cecily's own life was far less glamorous. She married Ralph Scrope, but the marriage was annulled, and she later married John Welles, a loyal supporter of Henry VII. After Welles's death, she entered two more marriages, including one to Thomas Kyme, a match made without royal permission that caused a scandal at court and cost her much of her royal favor. Although she never played a major political role, Cecily lived through one of England's most dramatic periods, witnessing the end of the Plantagenets and the beginning of the Tudor age. Today, she remains a fascinating but often overlooked princess whose life reflects the uncertain fortunes of England's royal women.
