It’s an optional rule iirc—it’s just widely used to make the game more challenging.

I still feel bad for not using it now if it's apparently a thing that's frowned upon not to do. It hadn't even come to mind until now, but I'm not sure if there's any point in changing it at this point if I've already "ruined" it for myself by coming so far without using it.

Nah not yet. I guess my best bet is just to get her to turn into the trash cloak AND evolve in the Gym, haha. Thanks!

uh… I would just say it’s whatever cloak she’s currently in, but I don’t know how they even change cloaks :C

It's based on the place they last battled (as opposed to where they're currently battling).

So for example, if I battled in the grass, but the last time she had battled was in a building, she would appear in the trash cloak.

But in the battle after that, regardless of location, she would be in the grass cloak.
