It was one of those nights when he was reminded what life was like before the curse and after his family was torn apart. Why he felt comfortable in the stone palace that shielded him from the rest of the world. Why no one even bothered to see him anymore.
Of course his mother and a princess whose name was hidden under memories of grief and torture missed him –greeted him with smile and a warm embrace, even. But then there was his brother; he was not easily fooled. Even with the story of some villain holding everyone hostage here, he would not listen.
Aiden, jaws clenched in anger, would demand proof. There was no trace of whoever did this to them and the castle seemed as if it hadn’t changed since they left Adam to his devices. All the staff was there, nothing was missing, and the servants couldn’t even describe who took over the castle.
Adam reasoned with him, pointing out that his disappearance and lack information about his whereabouts was enough. But, even with his arguments, he wasn’t able to give much more.
The foolish excuses struck something in his older brother, and all that anger he felt finally rushed out of him to make Adam know what sentiments he felt for the last 10 years. Bearing the loss of his two siblings and a father, and the responsibility of taking care of his mother, who cared more about her other children than him, at a young age did not treat him so kindly –how could it? But, now that the son she always loved more had returned, it’s as if his mother had lost all sensibility to welcome him back. No one seemed angry about that very same prince abandoning them except him. In his eyes, the same, selfish and spoiled prince was being forgiven for his irresponsibility, although he was nothing more than a replaceable, prodigal heir.
That’s when Adam went silent and Aiden had the nerve to leave after telling him what he truly thought. It felt like he was slapped multiple times in the face, but even he had to admit his brother had a good reason.
As he tried to process what had occurred, a voice alerted the prince. The words flew by him, but he cared little for them. He only knew someone had heard everything.
“What are you dong here?” He called out, a soft growl rumbled in his throat.
Clarice knew coming here could be dangerous, but she had to risk it. The prince certainly was beastly, but he had fearlessness, strength, and most importantly, power.
Yet, she had heard from many people that when people approached Prince Adam for alliances, he wanted nothing of the sort and would humiliate them, or worse. Those were the rumors. Clarice wasn’t sure if they held any truth. Still, she had to try.
“I come on behalf of the Medici family of Italy.”
“And I come alone. I promise, I’m here on peaceful terms.” she assured. “I let myself in. I hope you don’t mind.”
As much as the woman wanted to bring guards or even just Dragonetti, someone told her that the Prince may see it as a threat if she brought men with swords with her.
Granted, this also left herself more vulnerable, as she did not bring any weapons along either.
She was told if there were weapons found on her, she would be cast out as well. Again, she didn’t know how true any of this was, but she thought it best to take precaution and follow some advice.
