There was naturally a pride in the work his son and his eldest daughter had been able to do to help the effort, he was even more proud of them for sticking with it despite what he knew the reactions of others could sometimes be. A hand landed on Mycroft’s shoulder while the crowd celebrated in the streets outside the palace, Albert wanted his attention and he beamed at him once he had it.

“You -have done so well.” He praised him as a chant started up echoing ‘we want the King’ just beyond the balcony doors, but it was ignored for just that moment, “I am so --proud of you, son. -Congratulations on -peace.” He just hoped it would last.

A party in the Palace at least guaranteed a place for a handful of favourites and as the King made his way through the numbers of friends and officials, all with a drink in their hand and a smile on their face, he stopped in front of James, offering him is own very genuine and beyond pleased smile that peace had at last been achieved.

He took up the other man’s hand and shook it properly, no standard polite royal squeeze, that time was a sure and thankful gesture. “Well -done, James. May it -be the last --time.”

There was an almost palpable sense of change in the air on that day, that finally and regardless of all the horrors, near misses and almost total defeat, they had won despite the odds! For the first time in what felt like a very long time Albert was actually relaxed.

Crowds had gathered in the streets, as was expected and Albert had a few days prior actually returned to Buckingham Palace, bringing his surviving sister with him. He had been peering out at the gathering on the Mall before he turned to check on Ashildr and actually, very genuinely smiled to her. “I did not -think this -day would --come, -but I am -so -happy -to see it.”

Albert had an astonishing memory for faces and there was one he spotted from the balcony that was encouraged to venture into Buckingham Palace once again not as staff, but as a guest of the King. 

Richard was shown upstairs to towards the balcony doors where the King was returning in from waving with his wife and daughters. He laid eyes on Richard again and made a b-line straight for him with a kind smile to greet him. “-Here is a Yorkshire man I -have dearly wished -to see and what a -day -to -have you -back.”

“Sir Watson-Watt.” Albert greeted as he made his way to him in the hall of the Palace, a glass of champagne in his hand, though it had hardly been touched and a friendly smile on his face. “We owe you and your -hard work a -great deal.” Praise if ever there was any as he regarded him happily.

“You -helped our -forces -to save many lives and as Sovereign -to the --people of this -country and -Commonwealth, --please accept my -genuine thanks.” He took Robert’s hand gently to shake it, and no doubt there would be something a little more to show that thanks but for now Albert could only offer his words.

Albert watched his daughters leave the Palace party to join in the celebrations in the streets outside, he was nervous to see them leave and of course had not allowed them to go unescorted. He turned to his dear cousin, with that slightly merry smile to his face as he whispered, “Best -distract me or I might -rush --to the -balcony -to watch them -go.” He teased, though part of him was tempted to try and keep an eye on them himself.

“-Welcome to -peace at last.” He raised his glass to her and grinned all the more, “I am -glad you are -here with us -to see it in.”

There had been a few days of uncertain relief before the confirmation came through that the surrender had been finalised and signed. A few hours beforehand had been the broadcast to confirm and then crowds had filled the London streets outside. Just behind the balcony doors, Albert offered out his arm to Katherine with a gentle and sure smile. “-Peace will last this -time.” He promised her and straightened out as the doors were gently pulled open to allow the family onto the balcony to greet the masses.

“The --public awaits.” He teased her but oh, there was such a relief as if a huge burden had been lifted and once again Albert was filled with a whole new sort of energy as the crowd roared excitedly from outside.
