Can you be a feminist without knowing what a feminist is?

Several celebrities have recently been called “feminist icons” when they actually don’t know what feminism is. Some even have misconstrued ideas of what being a feminist means.

Katy Perry, who has been named a “feminist icon", said the wrong definition of feminism in an interview on an Australian talk show (get linky with it by watching the video and read about it here) while still being perfectly okay with being viewed as someone important to the movement. Can people, like Perry, be seen as actual feminist icons if they don’t know what it is they’re standing for?

In my opinion, anybody who supports equal rights between the genders is a feminist, willingly or not. That being said, you can’t be a feminist icon without knowing what a feminist is. How can you be seen as some important figure in a movement, and fully support the idea, and not at least know the basic definition of feminism?
