An online friend is a best friend

Hey everyone 😉 Please excuse my rambling here. This isn't Solavellan related at all but instead a statement on a very special friendship.

A year ago today I received a message from someone- a reader of my fic Underfoot. Though it was only a few chapters in, she was a fan and offered to draw a banner for it.

I was in a dark time in my life, likely the darkest. A cheating ex, my world seemingly destroyed and my future forever changed. A kind message and offer from a stranger online meant a great deal to me.

I had no idea how important she would become.

This year has been hard between finding whom I am again while working and going to university full time but my constant has been her. My rock, my place to turn to, and someone just as obsessed with Solas and Solavellan as I am. 😂 I can talk to her at any hour of the day about anything, important or not. I am grateful everyday that I can call her my friend- my sister.

She's also drawn a lot of art I adore so thats a big plus.

I guess I just wanted everyone to know that not only can you find true friends online but maybe even your best friend. And I'm sure those who have stayed to read all this have figured out whom I'm speaking of but it feels important that others know incase you take her for granted.

How did you pick your OC's name?

It was originally Layla from the Eric Clapton song(I really love that song and thought the name flowed nicely with 'Lavellan' 😊) and then Leyla and finally I settled on Leilah as the spelling because it's more Elvhen looking. Roughly means shining hope, I'm not good at Elvhen but I tried my best.

Is your OC older or younger than you, or a similar age? 

When I created her almost 12 years ago she was a few years older than me, and now at the end of DATV she's still slightly older than me. 😊

Any physical traits you share with your OC?

Not at all. I wish.(Her nose and lips and those curves 🫠)

Any personality traits you share with your OC?

Mostly the negative ones, as I was creating her she seemed too perfect so I pulled from my own life experiences(at least I can write that well lmao)

Any personal abilities/mannerisms/habits/hobbies you passed onto your OC?

A few mannerisms, talking excessively about her preferred subjects to those she feels comfortable with(Solas, Cole and Dorian mainly) and switching her weight between her feet when she's nervous/antsy or excited, when she's around people it's less noticeable.

Where do you and your OC differ the most?

Patience, Leilah is the queen of it and I wish I had more of it but I don't. Also, her love of cooking, I can cook but I hate it.

What trait/ability does your OC have that you wish you did?

Her fighting skills whether it's archery or another weapon or even hand to hand(think Black Widow mixed with Hawkeye 🫠), she's a powerhouse and I love that for her. Also, her flexibility and her ability to strategize and assess situations quickly. 

In a situation where you existed in the same world as your OC, would your OC be friends with you? Or alternatively, if your OC was your roommate, could you live with them?

I would love to live with Leilah, she's very motherly and loves to take care of people so I just know she'd be a source of warmth and joy and I feel like since we're both independent and reserved/quiet people we would get along well.

If you could give one piece of advice to your OC, what would you say?

That it's okay to ask for help, that she doesn't need to do everything alone. There are people around her that she can lean on and cry on their shoulder if she needed to. That she doesn't have to hold her tears in or hide her emotions. That it's okay to be vulnerable sometimes and that it's not a sign of weakness.(Oops, talking to myself too I guess but I won't listen and neither will she 😅)

From these Ship Headcanon Questions

💌 More often than not, it’s Solas who’s leaving little notes and gifts for her. Tucked in a book she was looking for or hidden in place sight among her correspondence at her desk or sometimes slipped into her pack while they were out traveling. As torturous as the waiting for her to find it is, he rather enjoys it, knowing that she’ll enjoy the little signs that he’s thinking of her and she doesn’t even know she has another to look forward to. Sometimes they’re just observations about their day that he wouldn’t normally speak of aloud among their companions and sometimes they’re encouragement that she is indeed as capable as everyone believes she is. Sometimes they’d be lines of poetry that he either read or remembered from ages ago that came to mind after something they witnessed or something she said. She’s tried to leave her own little notes for him but she never felt like her own were quite as meaningful or thoughtful as his, but he enjoyed them all the same. 

👀 Hard to say, neither are the jealous type really. If I had to choose, it would probably be Althima. Solas can be protective but he knows her well enough to know that she’s not the type to ever stray, even momentarily. He also knows that he is the most significant relationship in her life, at least as far as friends and lovers go. There’s been no one else, at least no one else anywhere near what they are to each other. For Althima though, there’s so much of Solas’s life that she just knows nothing about and thinking about relationships he might have had in the past, especially those that deeply affected him makes her uneasy. She has a moment of jealousy in Ch13 of IDHC when he tells her about his relationship with Mythal, even though it wasn’t a romantic connection. She tries to suppress the feeling and wave it away but she’s not always a good liar, especially not good enough to fool him, so I’d say it’s pretty obvious and it’s also pretty obvious that she doesn’t want to think about it or feel that way either. 

☕ Solas is always the first to fall asleep and usually the first to rise. Althima’s sleep schedule tends to be more chaotic because of the Anchor and also just anxiety induced insomnia, so sometimes she’s already awake by the time he wakes up. On other occasions, he has tried to wake her gently using the typical strategies, like calling her name and touching her shoulder, offering her breakfast and a cup of tea, but my girl is stubborn so when that doesn’t work, pulling away all the blankets and a magically chilled hand to her cheek or her feet always does the trick. But if they don’t have anywhere to be, he’s more than content to let her sleep in.

Love this! Gonna use your OC Leilah.

The quiet, a welcome place for the wise, does not bring comfort today. Papers rustle and he must feign attention least his thoughts wander- again- to places his hands- his mouth- know well and yet never enough. He wanted to be wise of her: a new pursuit clashing with the old. A meeting place, a promised time- the anticipation painful and joyous.

The Commander- Cullen- bends the spine between meaty hands not meant to cradle intellect. He wonders- not the first time- why a man such as he visits here. Was he not taught to read only to recite the Chant of his false god? To spray the vitriol of a god that is contradiction- loving those He abandoned? Solas paces, elegant fingers closing precious bundle, to return in order. His eyes wander, as his mind often does, to his beloved. She steps on the crest of the stairs and speaks-low, feminine- utterly sensual now that he knows her- knows how his own name sounds in passionate cries from her lips. His ears heat. He turns away.

He pretends he does not hear, though there is no way he could not, as she reports a need for him at the barracks. He nearly sags as the thump, thump, thump of heavy armor rattles down the way whence she came. It is a weakness, how badly he craves her, as she moves silently. He must be strong- pull his will from millennia past- form a resolve of diamond. The library was open, in public, in the eyes of all who worshiped her to see, to watch and

Her palm small and warm on his back- the exhale escaping him ragged; tension released. He will not kiss her. He has led armies, defeated would be gods, overthrown tyrants with laughter- changed the world to the broken half of where he now stood and he absolutely would not kiss her.

"Ma lath." A whispered endearment on her lips, his knees weak with it as she glides forward to meet his eyes. Golden hair down, damp, curling to cling and clinging to curl on her neck- seagreen eyes softly glowing. She has bathed, scent overwhelming him as he imagines how she must taste only of her, only of those lips- her neck, and down to-

He will not kiss her.

"Leilah, my heart." Responding instead, a shiver rolls to be caught by her hand on him. What does he say? What can he say? Opening his mouth, his distraction a gain as she licks her lips- her teeth scraping the lower as the pink of her tongue disappears.

He must kiss her.

Solas grabs- just as much brute as the Commander- and pulls-leads further into the shelves. Leilah goes on willing legs and he must- he shouldn't- he can't-

Hands on soft curves, full bottom filling hands before she is placed on table. A kiss, then another, then another, then another-

He laughs quietly, overwhelmed with the freedom of joy, by being wanted exactly how he is- being seen by and loved by Empathy. The sound is muffled by the kiss and he finds she laughs as well.

He does not find comfort in the quiet any longer. His peace- she is here- Leilah is here- sharing laughter between kisses, hidden away in the shelves to steal time- any time- they have.
