This is only 40 minutes worth of photon capture of this distant small object. NGC 2359, Thor’s Helmet Nebula, is a 12,000 light year distant emission nebula in the constellation Canis Major. It is about 30 light-years in size. The central star is an extremely hot star thought to be in a brief pre-supernova stage of evolution. Interactions with a nearby large molecular cloud are thought to have contributed to its complex shape and curved bow-shock structure. IC 1848: the Soul Nebula. Last night I photographed two nebulae in the constellation Cassiopeia, the so-called Heart and Soul Nebulae. These two vividly red emission nebulae sit about 7000 light years away and are active star formation regions. The brilliant red color comes from ionized hydrogen gas. This image is a result of 3 3/4 hour exposure time.
