Barrels of fun
‘Roll out the barrel’ — and the beer drought is on the run. Mr B. Kelly, of Braddon (pictured), cellarman at a city hotel, unloads draught beer yesterday.
The drought ended for some Canberra hotels and all clubs when the first consignment of beer from Sydney in over a fortnight arrived. A brewery workers’ strike caused the drought.
The delivery, which came by rail, was for hotels serving Reschs…

THE Cascade Brewery Co. Ltd. has imported three trial steel drums, now being used on the Mainland for bulk beer. The brewery is investigating how they stand up to cartage, and whether they affect the flavour of beer. The steel drums eventually may replace the barrels made of Tasmanian blackwood, because there is a shortage of wood and coopers. Here Mr. F. G. Natty, cellarman at…

Lady Luck & the pub rouse-about
The Warwick Farm Racecourse Hotel, Liverpool, where Bill Price worked as a cellarman.
BILL Price fitted perfectly the profile of a pub rouse-about or ‘useful’.
A drifter, he did most odd jobs around the pubs where he worked in return for boarding and lodgings. He did jobs like tapping beer kegs or barrels, to collecting glasses, cleaning toilets, and emptying ashtrays.
Bill worked in an unnamed…

A trio of beers at Triple Rock in Berkeley. On the top, Cellarman Saison, a collaboration with Sante Adairius, and an easy 4 of 4. On the bottom left, Hop Salad, a simply wonderful double IPA - another easy 4 of 4. On the bottom right, Nod N Smile triple IPA - a great 3 of 4. The Cellarman is hugely influenced by Sante Adairius and the yeast profile is very clearly theirs. Light, bright, yeast-driven, and drinkable, I have very little to say except that I want more. Hop Salad is one of the juiciest IPAs I've had - a whole lot of citrus and tropical fruit notes, as well as a number of other pine/herbal notes as well. The body has some nice balancing sweetness to it, but the focus here is the hops, and yet it remains drinkable and not too bitter. Nod N Smile is a very good triple IPA, but a bit too over the top for me - it's a bit on the sweet side of things and the alcohol burn is noticeable. Still, it has a nice bright hop profile like Hop Salad. Overall, a nice trio of leftovers from SF Beer Week!
