GE’s Soapbox Moment: General Electric used stage time at Mobile World Congress to urge telecom companies to embrace the industrial internet of things. Sue Siegel, chief innovation officer of the 126-year-old conglomerate, implored companies to bring the tap-and-swipe ease of consumer electronics to the industrial space. Highly aware of the necessary imperative for industrial innovation, cellular connectivity companies like Kore Wireless, Infineon and GeoTraq have already stepped up to the plate and are actively working with businesses to provide unique M2M solutions to keep industries competitive in today’s global market.

Blockchain RHOCs: Reflective Venture Partners, a newly formed blockchain technology firm, has launched with an initial fund of 100 million RHOCs, RChain Cooperative's native crypto currency. The two companies plan to fund a minimum of twelve blockchain-specific distributed applications (dApps) and the startups that build them. While blockchain technology is still relatively new, their vision is to advance current architecture into an open source platform, leading to the creation of new decentralized financial technologies and ultra-secure medical record keeping systems.

eSIM-plicity: Deutsche Telecom and Telefόnica are now offering eSIM connectivity solutions for multi-device management. The German operator demonstrated its new IoT solution by connecting a c smartwatch, Microsoft tablet and BMW i3 connected car to a single device. Telefόnica’s connectivity platform will detect cellular devices and enroll them into AWS IoT automatically.  American based companies such as Telit, GeoTraq and Sierra Wireless are also offering GSMA embedded SIM solutions which reduce complexity, time to market and total cost of ownership.

Chandra Discovers a Ring of Black Holes in Galaxy AM 06 dual sim  44-741

Astronomers have used NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory to discover a ring of black holes or neutron stars in a galaxy 300 million light years from Earth.

This ring, while not wielding power over Middle Earth, may help scientists better understand what happens when galaxies smash into one another in catastrophic impacts.

In this new composite image of the galaxy AM 0644-741 (AM 0644 for short), X-rays from Chandra (purple) have been combined with optical data from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope (red, green, and blue). The Chandra data reveal the presence of very bright X-ray sources, most likely binary systems powered by either a stellar-mass black hole or neutron star, in a remarkable ring. The results are reported in a new paper led by Anna Wolter from INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera in Milano, Italy.

Where did the ring of black holes or neutron stars in AM 0644 come from? Astronomers think that it was created when one galaxy was pulled into another galaxy by the force of gravity. The first galaxy generated ripples in the gas of the second galaxy, AM 0644, located in the lower right. These ripples then produced an expanding ring of gas in AM 0644 that triggered the birth of new stars. The first galaxy is possibly the one located in the lower left of the image.

The most massive of these fledgling stars will lead short lives — in cosmic terms — of millions of years. After that, their nuclear fuel is spent and the stars explode as supernovas leaving behind either black holes with masses typically between about five to twenty times that of the Sun, or neutron stars with a mass approximately equal to that of the Sun.

Some of these black holes or neutron stars have close companion stars, and siphon gas from their stellar partner. This gas falls towards the black hole or neutron star, forming a spinning disk like water circling a drain, a Vending Telemetry  nd becomes heated by friction. This superheated gas produces large amounts of X-rays that Chandra can detect.

While a ring of black holes or neutron stars is intriguing in itself, there is more to the story of AM 0644. All of the X-ray sources detected in the ring of AM 0644 are bright enough to be classified as ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). This is a class of objects that produce hundreds to thousands of times more X-rays than most “normal” binary systems in which a companion star is in orbit around a neutron star or black hole. Until recently most astronomers thought that ULXs generally contained stellar-mass black holes, with the possible presence in some cases of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) that contain over a hundred times the mass of the Sun. However, this thinking was overturned when a few ULXs in other galaxies, including M82 and M51, were found to contain neutron stars.

Several other explanations besides IMBHs have been suggested for the intense X-ray emission of ULXs. They include unusually rapid growth of the black hole or neutron star, or geometrical effects arising from the funneling of infalling material along magnetic field lines.

The identity of the individual ULXs in AM 0644 is currently unknown. They m data terminal unit  ay be a mixture of black holes and neutron stars, and it is also possible that they are all black holes or all neutron stars.

Not all of the X-ray sources in the image are located in the ring of AM 0644. One of the sources is a rapidly growing black hole that’s located well behind the galaxy at a distance of 9.1 billion light years from Earth. Another intriguing source detected by Chandra is a growing supermassive black hole located at the center of the Grid Analytics System   galaxy. In the new study, the researchers also used Chandra observations to study six other ring galaxies in addition to AM 0644. A total of 63 sources were detected in the seven galaxies, and 50 of them are ULXs. The authors see a larger average number of ULXs per galaxy in these ring galaxies than in other types of galaxies. Ring galaxies have stimulated the interest of astronomers because they are ideal testbeds for examining models of how double stars form, and understanding the origin of ULXs.

The paper describing the study of AM 0644 and its sister ring galaxies appeared in the August 10, 2018 issue of the Astrophysical Journal and is available online. The co-authors of the paper are Antonella Fruscione from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., and Michela Mapelli from INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova in Padova, Italy.

Ultra-Strong Art remote monitoring  ificial Muscles Made From Carbon Nanotubes

In order to showcase ultra-strong artificial muscles, Ray Baughman from the University of Texas at Dallas and his colleagues built a catapult.

The scientists published their findings in the journal Science. The device contains yarns similar in diameter to human hair, spun from carbon nanotubes and soaked in paraffin wax. When a current is passed through the yarn, the wax heats up and expands. As the yarn swells, its particular helical weave causes it to shorten, and the muscle contracts. As it cools, the yarn relaxes and returns to its original length. When coiled lightly or heated to high enough temperatures, wax-free yarns behave in the same fashion.

The torque produced by the twisting and untwisting of the yarns is sufficient to power a miniature catapult. The yarn can haul 200 times the weight that a natural muscle of the same size can, an retail  d generates more torque than a large electric motor if compared by weight. Currently, the available manufacturing t industrial networking  echniques have limited the weight of the yarn. They can make yarn that lifts up 50 grams. That doesn’t sound like much, but researchers have shown the nanotube yarns lifting loads as much as 50,000 times greater than their own weight.

The yarn could be used as actuators in microfluidic systems or as components in optical cameras, within 2 years. They could also be used as intelligent sensors.

Biochemists Reveal New Insight on Bacterium That Protects Plants Fro smart grid  m Disease

Like all organisms, plants are associated with bacterial communities in which helpful and harmful bacteria compete for dominance. Among the weaponry of these warring bacteria are molecular syringes that some bacteria can use to inject toxins into others. In a study published in the February 2 issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, researchers at McMaster University in Canada pinpointed the identity of one such toxin used by a soil-dwelling bacterium that protects plants from disease.

The bacterium Pseudomonas pr Remote Machine Monitoring & Maintenance System  otegens can kill soil-dwelling plant pathogens, including fungi and bacteria that attack the roots of important crops such as cotton. Pseudomonas protegens releases diverse antimicrobial compounds into the soil, but John Whitney was curious specifically about the compounds that it was injecting directly into other bacteria through the type VI secretion system, or T6SS.

“[The T6SS] is this molecular nanomachine that injects toxic protein into other species of bacteria and kills them,” Whitney said. “Plant protective bacteria that have [T6SS] can protect plants from pathogens better relative to [bacteria] that don’t have it.”

Je iiot  nny Tang and Nathan Bullen, undergraduate students from the University of Waterloo working with Whitney on a co-op work-study assignment, spearheaded the discovery that the toxic protein used by P. protegens aga overhead Line sensor inst other bacteria acts on a molecule found in nearly all living cells: nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. NAD+ is a cofactor, or “helper” molecule, in many biochemical reactions. By injecting a protein that destroys NAD+, P. protegens is able to kill other bacteria.

The team then investigated the genome sequences of many other bacteria to see how widespread the strategy of targeting NAD+ is in microbial warfare. They found that many bacteria with secretion systems carry genes similar to the one encoding the NAD-targeting toxin.

“We started to see that this isn’t just a way of killing that is enacted by plant-protective bacteria,” Whitney said. “If you look at the distribution of this (protein) among all sequenced bacteria, it appears that many different bacteria in many different environmental niches use this mode of action to outcompete other bacteria.”

The abundance of these toxins in nature raises many questions: How do different bacteria in different environments evolve to resist this toxin? Are NAD-targeting toxins more effective against some bacterial species than others? Understanding the diversity of bacterial weapons is an active area of study among agricultural researchers who would like to develop better ways to fight plant diseases.

“The identification and characterization of antibacterial toxins produced by plant-protective bacteria may one day allow us to engineer these bacteria to have enhanced ability to suppress pathogens,” Whitney said.

The Inherent Unpredicta gateway  bility of El Nino Events

El Niño events are not as predictable as previously smart vending   thought. According to new analyses of climate records locked within ancient corals, the frequency and strength of the ocean-warming phenomenon were more variable during the last century than, on average, during the past 7,000 years.

The scientists published their findings in the journal Science¹. The finding discounts the idea that long-term variations in the Earth’s orbit influence the climate. El Niños are marked with substantially warmer than normal sea surface temperature, which is seen along the equatorial Pacific. These events, coupled with La Niñas, which are defined by cooler than average sea surface temperatures in the same region, steer weather patterns across large parts of the globe. These phenomena are called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and in modern times, El Niños occur once every 2 to 7 years in varying strength and length.

Scientists often estimate the strength and frequency of ENSO events by turning to lake sediments. The layers of sediments provide insight into precipitation. But some of the best climate records are locked in corals because the ratios of oxygen isotopes incorporated into their calcium carbonate skeletons can help scientists decipher past trends in precipitation and temperature on a month-by-month basis.

Kim Cobb and her colleagues looGrid Monitoringked at long-term variations in the ratio of oxygen-18 and oxygen-16 isotopes locked in the corals on Christmas Island and Fanning Island. In that region, El Niño causes warmer sea surface temperatures and increased precipitation, which results in lower concentrations of oxygen-18 in coral carbonates.

Radioactive dating was used to estimate when each of the samples were alive and growing. They were sliced, and tiny samples were taken, spread 1 millimeter apart. The chemical analysis revealed the climate change in the area, going back 7,000 years. This triples the amount of climate data available previously from corals.

Long-term variations in ENSO magnitude and frequency during the 20th century we commercial  re on average much larger than at any time in the last 7,000 years. It’s not clear why the 20th century variability in ENSO is so much higher than in previous centuries, states Cobb. It could be related to the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but there isn’t enough data available to conclude this.

Previous studies indicated that ENSO variability was affected by the amount of sunlight striking the Northern Hemisphere in summer, but the new results seem to indicate that this isn’t the case. The analysis indicates that if such changes play a role, it’s a minor one. ENSO was weaker during the mid-Holocene, 6,000 years ago.

Russians Celebrate Drilling into Lake Vostok, Big industrial networking  gest Antarctic Subglacial Lake

It took two chilling decades, but the Russian team has finally broken into Lake Vostok, the largest of the lakes hidden under Antarctica’s ice, and the most deeply buried. Lake Vostok has been isolated for millions of years and it might contain specifically adapted microorganisms, that haven’t been seen on the surface of the planet for a long time.

The Russian drill hit the lake water, 3,769.3 meters down, at 10:25PM on February 5th, 2012. Temperatures had been plummeting as the Antarc Dual SIM M2M router  tic summer ended, and scientists were getting ready to leave before it became too cold, for safety concerns.

Although the Russian scientists did take samples before leaving, they will most likely have to wait until December to extract any frozen lake samples, and until 2013-14 to retrieve unfrozen lake water. Initially, the Vostok drilling project began as an effort to sample ice-cores to examine ancient climatic conditions. By the mid-1990s, scientists had confirmed Grid Fault Detectionthe presence of a giant lake buried beneath the ice and speculated that sampling it might yield signs of ancient life.

Drilling was shut down to prevent contamination from kerosene and Freon that was being used as drilling fluids. Drilling started up again in 2005 with a plan to replace the drill bit with a thermal probe once they got near the lake.

The Russian team plans to explore the lake in 2013-14  Embedded LTE Cat 1 router using different probes, cameras, robots, and samplers. All of the probes will be carried down the borehole in hermetically sealed containers.

The US and UK plan on sampling water and sediments from different Antarctic subglacial lakes in 2012-2013 using heated glacier meltwater to bore holes, which should stay open for at least 24 hours. The UK hopes to get to Lake Ellsworth situated at 3.1 kilometers while the US plans to get to Lake Whillans.

Physi cloud platform  cists Demonstrate Control of a Two-Qubit System

In a newly published study, UCSB physicists demonstrate the high level of controllability needed to explore ideas in quantum simulations.

While the Martinis Lab at UC Santa Barbara has been focusing on quantum computation, former postdoctoral fellow Pedram Roushan and several colleagues have been exploring qubits (quantum bits) for quantum simulation on a smaller scale. Their research appears in the current edition of the journal Nature.

“While we’re waiting on quantum computers, there are specific problems from various fields ranging from chemistry to condensed matter that we can address systematically with superconducting qubits,” said Roushan, who is now a quantum electronics engineer at Google. “These quantum simulation problems usually demand more control over the qubit system.” Earlier this year, John M. Martinis and several members of his UCSB lab joined Google, which established a satellite office at UCSB.

In conjunction with developing a general-purpose quantum computer, Martinis’ team worked on a new qubit architecture, which is an essential ingredient for quantum simulation, and allow wireless m2m  ed them to master the seven parameters necessary for complete control of a two-qubit system. Unlike a classical computer bit with only two possible states — 0 and 1 — a qubit can be in either state or a superposition of both at the same time, creating many possibilities of interaction.

One of the crucial specifications — Roushan refers to them as control knobs or switches — is the connectivity, which determines whether or not, and how, the two qubits interact. Think of the two qubits as people involved in a conversation. The researchers have been able to control every aspect — location, content, volume, tone, accent, etc. — of the communication. In quantum simulation, full control of the system is a holy grail and becomes more difficult to achieve as the size of the system grows.

“There are lots of technological challenges, and hence learnings involved in this project,” Roushan said. “The icing on the cake is a demonstration that we chose from topology.” Topology, the mathematical study of shapes and spaces, served as a good demonstration of the power of full control of a two-qubit system.

In this work, the team demonstrates a quantum version of Gauss’s law. First came the 19th-century Gauss-Bonnet theorem, which relates the total local curvature of the surface of a geometrical object, s lte  uch as a sphere or a doughnut, to the number of holes in the object (zero for the sphere and one for the doughnut). “Gauss’s law in electromagnetism essentially provides the same relation: Measuring curvature on the surface — in this case, an electric field — tells you something about what is inside the surface: the charge,” Roushan explained.

The novelty of the experiment is how the curvature was measured. Project collaborators at Boston University suggested an ingenious method: sensing the curvature through movement. How local curvature affects the motion can be understood from another analogy with electromagnetism: the Lorentz force law, which says that a charged particle in a magnetic field, which curves the space, is deflected from the straight pass. In their quantum system, the researchers measured the amount of deflection along one meridian of a sphere’s curve and deduced the local curvature from that.

“When you think about it, it is pretty amazing,” Roushan said. “You do not need to go inside to see what is in there. Moving on the surface tells you all you need to know about what is inside a surface.”

This kind of simulation — arbitrary control over all parameters in a closed system — contributes to a body of knowledge that is growing, and the paper describing that demonstration is a key step in that direction. “The technology for quantum computing is in its infancy in a sense that it’s not fully clear what platform and what architecture we need to develop,” Roushan said. “It’s like a computer 50 years ago. We need to figure out what material to use for RAM and for the CPU. It’s not obvious so we try different architectures and layouts. One could argue that what we’ve shown is very crucial for coupling qubits when you’re asking for a full-fledged quantum computer.”

Apple MV sensor   Maps – 3 Times More Likely to Get You Lost Than Google

After having been deemed unsafe by the Australian government a couple of weeks back, iPhone users now have access to Google Maps and it hasn’t come soon enough, as a new study indicates that Apple Maps is three times more likely to give you false directions than Google Maps.

CrowdFlower related their Secure remote networks   findings yesterday, and the company compared Google&r M2M gateway squo;s, Bing’s and Apple’s maps performance. 1,000 business listings were picked randomly in the USA and another 100 in the UK. For each listing, the goal was to look for two things: whether it could be found on any of the three mapping services, an vending vms d if the addresses were found, were the results accurate.

Apple’s performance was the worst of the three mapping services, with only 75% of the listings found in the USA, and 50% missing in the UK. Of the ones it found in the UK, one third of the listings were inaccurately placed, making Apple Maps almost unusable. In the USA, Apple Maps gets the location wrong 3.4% of the time. Google’s error rate is 1.1% and Bing’s is 1.3%.

The Apple Maps fiasco has already led to the firing of one executive, and since Google Maps has been available again for iOS users, activations are up again.
