Hate Crime legislation does not fix the problem
Andrey Bridges is being held for $5 million bail for the murder of Cemia Dove. Dove is the transwoman who was brutally murdered in Ohio and who then endured awful transphobic reporting by local and global news reporting venues that refused to recognize her gender, preferring to use "it" pronouns to describe her.
The arrest of Bridges, the alleged murdered, is being used an example of supposed justice under hate crime legislation. However, we continue to question the efficacy of hate crime legislation.
What does arresting, imprisoning Bridges for a long time, do to end hate? How does this intervene in systems of oppression when it reifies the very systems it purports to challenge: racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, classism, and so on.
While I hope to see some form of justice for Cemia Dove, I do hope that it is not on the sole back of Andrey Bridges. After all, the Associated Press and local news outlets aren't being charged with hate crimes for referring to Dove as "it." Thoughts?
