Cemlyn tern and gull colony June 2023 

The first thing that hits you is the wall of sound. Constant shrieks and wails riding over you like the waves lapping against Cemlyn’s distinctive stone beach. The next sense to be awakened to the experience is smell, that unmistakable seabird colony odour. And of course the sights to see are a treat to the eyes, busy and full of optimism. 

As you walk along the flower adorned beach, the first island on the lagoon behind the cordon you can see is dominated by Sandwich Terns with their immaculate black heads and bills with the bright yellow tip. They are striking birds to look at. Mixed in are inspiring Arctic Terns, an enigmatic bird with their blood red bills, never ending tails and their short legs. Move along an island and it’s more of the same, with a set of stones curving around the island where some Arctic and more so Common Terns with their bill as though dipped in ink with it’s black end rest. All the time terns particularly the Sandwiches rush over your head, going to or coming from the sea often with sand eel or other fish in their beak as they return. Dashing views of fine birds. At this time of year mixed in with the adults is the heartening sight of cute young birds, tern chicks are fluffy feathery gems and it is an honour to witness them as they move around hesitantly and rely on their parents. Another island along and there’s a notable set of Arctic Tern chicks on the edge, little birds that will became worldwide wanderers. 

Quite entertaining are the chicks of the Black-headed Gulls that also breed here, alien like, as though a different species. Bigger than the tern chicks, it’s interesting to see them wandering around more independently and swimming. A Mediterranean Gull, sticking out like a sore though eyecatching and beautiful thumb a pleasure to see, leading the line in a strong pack of other birds to enjoy at Cemlyn. All is of course not well with gulls and terns generally across the country as densely packed colonies continue to suffer the impacts of avian influenza, but for these precious moments immersed in one of the greatest natural spectacles the UK has to offer at this amazing Anglesey spot; one did not have a care in the world. 

The pictures in this set are ones I took on two visits to Cemlyn whilst in Anglesey the week before last of (in order of appearance in the photoset); Arctic Tern, Sandwich Tern flying, two consecutive images of Sandwich Terns and chick, Arctic Tern with Black-headed Gull chicks in shot, young Common Tern with Sandwich Tern chicks in shot, Sandwich Tern chick, Arctic Tern, Arctic Tern chicks and a Sandwich Tern in the sea.

Ten photos I took a year ago today at the cottage we stayed in, Beaumaris, Cemlyn and Cemaes on Anglesey

They are of; lots of Sandwich Terns in the air at Cemlyn which was an incredible sight, Beaumaris Castle, evening view from the cottage, Cemlyn with lots of foxgloves, also at Cemlyn some of my first Arctic Terns of 2021 with a Common Tern only the second time overall I’d seen Arctic Terns if I count the multiple times I saw them in Northumberland for the Farne Island in 2019 as one, my first Roseate Tern of last year alongside Black-headed Gull chicks, my first Kittiwake of 2021 and Herring Gull at Beaumaris, view into the Menai Strait from Beaumaris and view at Cemaes where we stopped for an ice cream. 

I also saw my first Grey Seal of 2021 in the sea from Cemlyn on that incredible day a year ago one of my best of last year and ever we all really took Cemlyn to our heart especially.

21/06/2021-Post 1 of 3: The cottage, Beamaris and Camaes 

I have split the blogs for today into three again and this flips around being about time spent today either side of our main walk at Cemlyn. 

I enjoyed seeing and photographing a lovely crane fly in the cottage shown in the first picture in this photoset before going to bed last night as I did Friday night before coming away. This morning we woke to more overcast conditions compared to past days with the mountains visible from the cottage obscured a little which did look dramatic. I took the second picture in this photoset of this.

We then set off to Beaumaris early this morning as we were booked on a cruise around Puffin Island. Weather conditions were assessed by the company and it could not go ahead today. But it still made a nice little run out to enjoy a different area of the Isle of Anglesey, which looked very beautiful a great picture postcard seaside town with a lovely castle and beautiful views of Puffin Island and over the water to mainland Wales. I took the third picture in this photoset of a view here. I enjoyed seeing a Herring Gull very close too making out its beautiful intricate markings and large nature up close it so great to have a spotlight on this common bird with their wailing call adding the soundtrack to the seaside town vibe I took the fourth picture in this photoset of this. I enjoyed one by a dog water bowl too as though it may have drunk from it.

On the way back I liked seeing Oystercatchers flying over the flat coast and on the way and way back it was great to get a side on view compared to when we drove over it of the impressive Menai bridge and the attractive Menai strait a charming piece of landscape in the quite dramatic conditions.

After Cemlyn on another typically packed holiday day today my next two posts are about Cemlyn we went on to Cemaes a charming Welsh coastal village with flags flying where it was lovely to take in some beautiful cliff and beach views with great vibes and enjoy an ice cream a key part of any holiday. I took the fifth and sixth pictures in this photoset of keys here. When back at the cottage tonight it was great to take in the sheep in a field nearby which its always lovely to see going in and out despite being behind a fence most of them move away when you come which is funny. I also enjoyed great sky scenes and views from this picturesque cottage again tonight its such a wonderful place to be which I took the seventh and final two pictures in this photoset of and a lovely Rabbit which comes in the garden I took eighth picture in this photoset it was lovely to see it.  Another brilliant day that I am so pleased to have had.
