Today's cemetery is Spital Cemetery in Chesterfield, a garden cemetery first opened in 1857 to serve the communities of Chesterfield and Tapton. It includes Established as well as Nonconformist graves from the Victorian era, with the oldest marked grave being that of a priest of the leper hospital from the 12th-13th century. Those graves locates closest to the church were in the first class, ornamented with the developing fashion for monumental markers, whilst the second class were located further down the hill and the third, and poorest, at the foot.
The Friends of Spital Cemetery seek to preserve this historic site, not only the graves but also the local flora and fauna which call it home, and present the cemetery Well Dressing every year. Travel to Chesterfield on the second Sunday of the month for a heritage tour between 1300 and 1400 hours.
