WASHINGTON — Saddled with daunting logistical and political obstacles, the 2020 census seriously undercounted the number of Hispanic, Black and Native American residents even though its overall population count was largely accurate, the Census Bureau said on Thursday.

At the same time, the census overcounted white and Asian American residents, the bureau said.

In essence, the bureau’s report said, minority groups — mostly concentrated in cities and tribal areas — were underrepresented in census figures, even though the total population count in those areas often was fairly accurate. That could affect those groups’ political clout, and conceivably could sway decisions by businesses and governments over the next decade, from the allocation of city services to locations of stores.

Although the bureau did not say how many people it missed entirely, they were mostly people of color, disproportionately young ones. The census missed counting 4.99 of every 100 Hispanics, 5.64 of every 100 Native Americans and 3.3 of every 100 African Americans.

In contrast, for every 100 residents counted, the census wrongly added 1.64 non-Hispanic whites and 2.62 ethnic Asians.

Young people in general were undercounted: by 2.79 percent for children under 5, and, among those ages 18 to 29, 2.25 percent for men and 0.98 percent for women. Older residents were overcounted, most significantly by 2.63 percent for women 50 and older.

Sometime before April 1st, you should be getting a letter in the mail from the US Census! That letter has a password to let you take the census online. If you do not take the census online, a representative of the Census comes to your house in person to read you the questionnaire for you. I’m one of those reps, but let’s be honest, with the corona virus, I’m even less inclined to go to people’s houses than before, especially since many of the people I talk to tend to be older or frail.  

So please try to take the Census online, or help others take it online. 

There is no reason you can’t share your census, it’s not the SAT, but the census bureau including their temp employees are never permitted to release the information gathered in any way that would identify you. 

There is No Citizenship Question on the Census. There Are not Questions about Immigration Status. 

There is a question on race (as always) and this year it does ask to specify where your ancestors come from. I’m white American of multiple generations, but it would not let me proceed without writing in ‘german’ or ‘irish’ for ancestral origins. 

Similarly, there is a question about relations to other people in the household, where if you are married/dating someone, it does ask to specify if you are in a same-sex relationship or not. 

The ‘what gender are you’ questions use the male/female as the only answers. 

I state these facts with the sole intent of relaying information on what you will find on the census if you fill it out. 

Filling out the census is a national duty, the same as voting. By filling it out, we arrange delegates, local and state funding, and gain a better picture of our current reality as a part of a multicultural nation.

El Censo de los Estados Unidos está empezando ahora. Antes del 1 Abril, las personas que viven los EU pueden hacer el censo en línea con una contraseña el correo. Si ustedes no hace el censo en línea, un representativo del censo departamento llegarán leer el censo con ustedes. Con la corona virus, tengo medio la idea de viajar casa a casa mucho, especialmente con personas viajo o enferma.

Por favor, utilizan el censo en línea y ayudar otros con ellos también. El gobierno es prohibido lanzar información del censo.

No hay preguntas de inmigración en el censo.

Hay una pregunta de raza (normal) pero este año hay una adición de origen de raza, como, soy, un estadounidense blanca, necesito escribir "Irish, Amelán" etc. 

Hay una pregunta de las relaciones de personas de casa. En este censo, la preguntará si una relación con su pareja/esposos son gay o hetero. 

También, la pregunta de sexo tiene solo masculino y feminino como respuestas.

Mi intención con esa información está preparando personas por el censo si ellos tienen miedo de las preguntas.

Hacer el censo es un deber similar a votación. Cuando entendemos cuántas personas en un lugar ayude más financiamiento en el estate o pueblo. Ese financiamiento va a escuelas, programas sociales, etc y la información es importante comprender una nación multicultural.

Philadelphia has since recovered almost all population loss after 1980. Perhaps rebuilding the city to 1950's old peak can be done over the next few decades as the rural remainders rush to move to the suburbs and many suburbanites move to the city itself.

Y’all if you’re in the US and you haven’t filled out the census for your household, this is why it’s important. Go do it online if you don’t have your paper version available: https://2020census.gov/en.html - it’s available in 13 languages, with guides in over 50 languages, very short and easy to take. Pssst if you want to help fight against census suppression, it looks like they still have jobs as census takers and other support.

The tl;dr of why the census is important: - it affects how resources are divided up, for schools, public services, etc. - it’s used for redistricting, which affects voting, from every single level from the most local of races up to the state level - we need to know racial makeup of areas so we have data to fight discrimination with - if you don’t answer the census and you’re a POC living in a predominantly white area, they can just fill in the blank and count you the same as who’s living in your same area
