What's better than a walk in central park when it's hot ?
With more than 35 million visits a year, it works. The strolling pedestrians, the Lycra-clad bikers, the horse carriages - the greatness of Central Park... is that it accommodates all of this traffic and remains inviting and rejuvenating. This owes a lot to Olmsted and Vaux’s decision to ban the geometric tyranny of the street grid from the park — nary a right angle is to be found within its borders - and their use of topography to disperse the crowds among verdant hills and dales.
The trouble with Central Park is that you can never forget where you are. Your reverie is constantly shattered by luxury high-rises lowering at every horizon. And yes, your treeline-dwarfed-by-skyline is a favorite photographic cliché, but to my mind it bears an unseemly resemblance to a real estate ad.

Spring in Central Park
Central Park this spring may seem a bucolic oasis, and it is widely considered one of the nation’s most successful urban parks. Yet beneath the surface, experts say, it is suffering the debilitating effects of time and modern use, and it will decay further unless its historic structures and landscapes are restored. The Central Park Conservancy is set to announce an ambitious 10-year, $300 million fund-raising and improvement effort.
