We just had our close-preview of Sau(dara) and the perspectives given by our friends from various fields were important to us! The work has certainly evolved from the previous site-specific performance presented in October. We weighed the perspectives given by audiences from that showing and took the space and time to discuss. There were moments when it was difficult to work around certain perspectives but we pulled through. We had to adapt to three changes. The first was the addition of @nrlfarahani_ into the cast. As the work involves the incorporation of my collaborators' lived experiences, we were careful to treat Farah's incorporation to the team as an addition rather than a replacement of our precious collaborator @shortysya . We spent time devising her story into the work. Secondly we welcome our dramaturg @gracieloufreebush_ for this phase of the work. Her role was integral in asking pertinent questions about our intentions and the visual richness of our text and movement. She continues to challenge what it means to "own" our lines and our bodies which eventually translates to us "owning" this work and honouring the universal message of being human: to assure oneself that "we are enough" amidst the expectations of hierarchy and patriarchy. Thirdly working around a new presentation space from the two storey facade of the C42, we readapted the work into a black box setting. We found new meaning and discovered new rituals, play and performativity. It was quite a challenge but I was reminded before, that at times we cannot be too precious.
