Submucous Fibrosis Surgery This gentleman has had the habit of chewing betel nuts for over 25 years now. His mouth opening gradually decreased with time and he now has only 3 mm of mouth opening. He presented to our hospital for management and was diagnosed with submucous fibrosis. Anesthesia was administered via bronchoscopic intubation because of his restricted mouth opening. Cuts were made in bilateral inner cheeks and the thick fibrous bands were excised. Nasolabial flaps were raised placing the incisions at the nasolabial folds to minimize scar formation. Care was taken to ensure patency of vascular supply from the facial artery. The flap was rotated, tunneled into the mouth and sutured to the inner cheek. Bilateral nasolabial incisions were closed in layers. He then underwent complete oral rehabilitation of his dentition with ceramic crowns fitted to his discoloured teeth, which had been neglected by him for many years. The patient was instructed to discontinue his habit.
