Hornwort or Coontail is a member of the Ceratophyllum genus of plants that do great in planted aquariums. They are native to the slow moving rivers, streams, marshes, ponds, and lakes throughout most of the temperate and tropical regions of the world. Hornworts are all really fast growing and do well in all light conditions. They can either be floated in the aquarium or anchored to the bottom, although they have no true roots. Stems can grow quite long (like 10 feet) depending on the species. They have small leaves that grow around the stem which looks similar to a raccoon's tail. Hornwort is great for setting up new aquariums, spawning fish, raising fry, controlling algae, and water filtration. Read More: Hornwort (Coontail, Ceratophyllum)
