I've been trying to work on my fictional world since middle school, scrapping and redoing a bunch of stuff, and I'm kind of stuck on how I should start. I have some ideas I'm still sticking with, like the various environments and the different creatures, but I'm all overwhelmed with it all. So, being the first person that comes to mind, how did you start your fictional world? Did you start with the creatures first or the environment? Was it the lore info or the visual designs first?
World building can be so overwhelming! To be honest, I’m often overwhelmed with it too. I’m not settled on the map for my world, I can NEVER think of place names, and I’m constantly waffling with what sort of wildlife to add/create. For me, the main character Nym came first. She used to be my fursona, but I wanted a whole world to surround her in that was her own. So I started making stuff up, like what kind if job would she have? Does she have family? What kinds of dangers would she encounter? The biggest help is just fantasizing/daydreaming about cool situations she would be in! Imagining her doing cool things helps fill in so many gaps. Take it slow and have fun with world building! I know it’s overwhelming as heck, but the important part is that you like what you are making. :)
