Nocturnal blooming, Round 2. Mother Nature has packed an astounding profusion of anthers and filaments into these buds, crazy. If I'd only known these night bloomings were such events back when I planted this cactus, they'd be much closer to the house... There's no moving this massive cactus now!
As with its siblings in the cereus family, the Peruvian Apple cactus is a nocturnal bloomer: This was when the buds first opened last night - it's an event this morning person will always stay up for! In the morning they look quite ravaged, so seems the bees wait up for them too.
Happy May Day everyone. In our garden, the Peruvian Apple Cactus has kicked off the month in a grand way.
