Okay, I've seen a lot of thoughts thrown out there about how Q should be living with Picard (or at least visiting often) & they're cute domestic space husbands who have wild and wacky adventures and I 100% approve HOWEVER may I just suggest the idea that Picard hasn't seen Q in like 20 years & is a bit (okay a lot) heartbroken about it & thinks that Q forgot him only to find out, half way through the series that the continuum punished Q again & weren't so nice about where they dumped him? (1/2)

oh my gosh I am so weak for this scenario!! and the worst best part of it is that when Picard first finds Q he doesn’t believe him. doesn’t believe he’s actually powerless, doesn’t believe he’s been powerless for 20 years. he thinks it’s just another way to mess with him, and he’s like “Q, I’m too old for these games”. 

and it kills them both, because Q is desperate and all he really wants after all these years is to be with Jean-Luc Picard, because the memory of Jean-Luc, of those clever eyes, that wonderfully human mind, was the only thing keeping Q going for 20 years. and Picard is heartbroken and angry, because after all this time his heart still skips a beat when Q looks at him, he still feels that combination of wonder and admiration and curiosity and frustration whenever Q is near, and yet to Q it’s all just another game. 

and then at the end Q sacrifices himself for Picard, and as he’s dying in Picard’s arms he says “it was all worth it, mon capitaine. please hold my hand, I don’t want to go into the dark alone.” 

Picard holds his hand and whispers, “You’re not alone. I love you.”

and… the Continuum decide to bring Q back to life because guess what? turns out the reason they punished him in the first place was because he’d fallen in love with a human, and helped said human save the species, and “if you love humans so much Q then live and die as one”. they spent 20 years laughing at him, poor pathetic mortal Q.

but when Jean-Luc said that he loved Q back… that changed everything. the Continuum never thought it possible. oh they’d made mortals fall in love with them before, but that was when they had power and omniscience. Picard fell in love with Q because of who he is, not what he is… and that’s something entirely new.

so they bring Q back to life to see what happens next, and him and Picard live happily ever after till the end of time

I've been wondering, when you talk about Gabriel's "non-action" do you mean it in a Daoist sense? Like Wu wei?

So I had to go and brush up on Wu wei because the last time I read about Taoism, I was a college undergraduate taking a Chinese painting course :P

Here’s the definition: 

In the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu explains that beings (or phenomena) that are wholly in harmony with the Tao behave in a completely natural, uncontrived way. The goal of spiritual practice for the human being is, according to Lao Tzu, the attainment of this purely natural way of behaving, as when the planets revolve around the sun. The planets effortlessly do this revolving without any sort of control, force, or attempt to revolve themselves, thus engaging in effortless and spontaneous movement.  Sinologist Herrlee Creel considered Wu wei a distinguishing factor between the more “purposive” religious Taoism of governmental Huang-Lao, emphasizing a striving for immortality, and the philosophical Taoism of the Zhuangzi, which emphasizes Wu wei in the sense of not striving, often considering the search for immortality secondary, laughable, or harmful.  In the Taoist texts, wu wei (無 爲) is often associated with water and its yielding nature. In illustration, it can assume any form or shape it inhabits.Wu may be translated as not have or without; Wei may be translated as do, act, serve as, govern or effort. The literal meaning of wu wei is “without action”, “without effort”, or “without control”, and is often included in the paradox wei wu wei: “action without action” or “effortless doing”. The practice of wu wei and the efficacy of wei wu wei are fundamental tenets in Chinese thought and have been mostly emphasized by the Taoist school. One cannot actively pursue wu wei. It manifests as a result of cultivation. The Tao is a guide.

Ultimately based on the context in which I use “nonaction,” I would say Gabriel does NOT adhere to the principles of Wu wei.  This is because Gabriel is still concerned with the effects of direct moral intervention (if he weren’t, he would not derive pleasure from exacting punishment on bad human beings earlier in his arc, in Seasons Two and Three, and even part of Five) and still concerned with his own “immortal” legacy (personal identity and what his actions will leave behind for his family and universe).  He is not detached from the world and its pleasures; rather he is actively engaged, and most importantly, he is far too great a proponent of individual liberty, and selfhood (not self as other, which by one definition is Jungian psychoanalysis and by another is a common Far Eastern sociological phenomenon, of group identity over individual identity).  What I mean by “nonaction” for Gabriel, then, is that if he’s given the opportunity to do active harm in a conflict, versus forego involvement, he will pick the latter, because at least there is a greater chance he won’t make things worse.  And further, as a being of great power, he shows mercy by not exerting powers he could easily exert on beings who trouble him.  

So I’m using the term “nonaction” as kind of a nullifier of “action,” rather than the far more negative connotation of idleness, indolence, or worst, and least accurate, apathy.  

Gabriel’s nonaction doesn’t stem from a belief that detachment is liberation. Rather, it stems from the active desire to mold the world around him for the better, too often mistaken as laziness or cowardice by his siblings (and “friends”).

Hiya! I don't mean to be a bother, since I know you're probably quite busy. I was just wondering if you're planning on bring this back on during winter break.

We are definitely hoping to.  My wife, who wrote half of it, has suffered a pretty severe bout of depression and only now is starting to recover from it, that’s why we had to pause editing.  The story’s done, it’s just hammering it out in editing, but depression’s a miserable thing.  But we haven’t abandoned it. <3 You’re no bother.  As soon as the mental health and physical insanity of IRL are sorted, we’ll be pushing to the conclusion.  Sorry about the delay.

I'm working long crazy hours this week. Give me your best sleepy fluffy fic. Any pairing (or complete lack of pairings) works.

I realized after writing this that it’s not entirely clear which Ray is in the story. I wrote it with RayK in mind but if you want you can think of it as RayV. ~600 words.

Ray stumbled, zombie-like into Welsh’s office.

“Good, you’re back– sweet Jesus, you two look awful.” Welsh stared as Fraser trailed Ray into the office. “Fraser, I didn’t think that it was possible for you not to look good.”

“Thank you kindly, sir,” Fraser said tiredly.

“We’ve been up for a week staking out our suspect. We just finished wrapping up the rest of the case,” Ray explained. “I cant remember the last time i saw my bed. My sweet, sweet bed.” Ray flopped down on the couch without waiting for an invitation. Fraser, after a second of hesitation, sunk into the spot next to him. He primly removed his hat and set it aside.

Welsh raised an eyebrow at the pair. “Well, I was going to ask for your reports, but now I’m thinking I should send you home. Vecchio, are you asleep?”

Ray sat up with a jolt, blinking furiously. “No sir, wide awake. See?”

“Yeah, right,” Welsh said skeptically. “I’m gonna call someone to drive you two home. You guys look like you could sleep until Christmas. Of next year.”

“No, it’s all good,” Ray protested. “Let’s just get the report over with before I forget anything.”

Welsh squinted suspiciously. “Fine. I’ll go get you some coffee so you don’t knock out on me.”

“Thank you kindly, sir,” Fraser said. It’s possible he was talking in his sleep. Welsh scoffed at him and got up, shutting the office door as he left.

While he waited, Ray looked around Welsh’s office, desperately searching for something interesting enough to keep him awake until his boss got back. Ray was squinting at an award hung on the wall, trying to read it, when he felt a weight on his shoulder.

Ray glanced over, then did a double take. “Fraser! Wake up!”

Fraser, in a very un-Mountie-like fashion, blearily raised his head off of Ray’s shoulder. “Shush, I’m trying to sleep.” Then he put his head back down and fell asleep immediately.

“Fraser!” Ray shook his friend’s shoulder, but Fraser blissfully slumbered on. Ray, after a few more tries, gave up. He decided that he’d let Fraser sleep until Welsh came back, at least, before waking him up again.

Ray crossed his arms over his chest, trying to get comfortable now that he had a Mountie snoring on his shoulder.

Only, Ray was really tired, too. Maybe he’d close his eyes for just a minute…

Welsh cautiously eased open his office door, sticking his head in just far enough to see inside.

Fraser’s head was planted on Ray’s shoulder. He was sleeping soundly, his mouth open slightly, not snoring but letting small puffs of air in and out in a somehow charming manner. His legs were curled up onto the couch, his boots sticking off the armrest somewhat. Ray was snoring, loudly. His feet were propped up on the desk and his arms went out in all directions, one hand managing to land on Fraser’s arm and the other half-falling off the couch.

Welsh shook his head and entered the room fully, quietly closing the blinds over the window into the bullpen. He wasn’t carrying mugs of coffee, but rather two fuzzy blankets. He carefully draped one blanket over Fraser, then tucked the other around Ray. Neither man stirred at all during the process.

Welsh crept over to his desk, gathering up an armful of files before he crept back towards the door. He could stand to sit out in the bullpen for a while and get some work done. And, as a bonus, it would scare the crap out of Huey and Dewey.

As he left, Welsh flicked the lights off. Yeah, he was a sap. Don’t tell anybody.

How did they meet?

Well, once upon a time there was a petty, arrogant scientist who was bad with people and a cocky, daredevil pilot.  The pilot sat in a chair that he shouldn’t have and endeared himself to the scientist by not making fun of his ridiculous orange fleece.  

Who developed romantic feelings first?

Rodney fell into lust first but it was John who first developed romantic feelings.  Rodney had a hard time believing that John could ever even want him and just didn’t even let his mind go there.  It took John realising that he was in love and a LOT of convincing for him to accept that he was wanted.

Who is their biggest “shipper?”

The entire expedition.  Chuck runs a betting pool and Miko posts explicit RPF fanfiction on a well-encrypted corner of the server.  

When did they have their first kiss and under what circumstances?

It’s trite, I know, but it happened in the infirmary after another almost dead experience.  Rodney had been sitting by John’s bed for four days and when the idiot finally woke up, he laid into him so hard, ranting and yelling and threatening to quit the team unless he stopped pulling stunts like this and John just looked up at him, a small smile on his face, and said “Rodney?”  “Yeah?”  “My ribs are really sore so why don’t you come down here so I can kiss you?”  

Who confessed their feelings first?

Rodney.  Inadvertently.  In the middle of a rant about why mint chocolate chip ice cream deserved space on the Daedalus.  To this day, John still isn’t sure that Rodney actually realised that he confessed his interest somewhere in the middle of that but it’s what got John thinking.

What was their first official date?

Well, Rodney says it was that picnic they took on the mainland but John doesn’t count two MREs and a two-hour jumper ride watching Rodney collate data a proper date.  John insists their first date was watching Signs in the infirmary after they first kissed but Rodney refuses to accept that their first date involved Mel Gibson.

How do they feel about double dates/group dates?

They are of one mind when they detest them with the level of hatred normally reserved for citrus.  Teyla and Kanaan are the only exception they make and that’s just because Teyla can beat them both up.

What do they do in their down time?

John tries to teach Rodney golf and Rodney tries to enlighten John about ‘real’ music.

What was the first meeting of parents as an official couple like?

They are both orphans but Jeannie squealed for a solid hour and Dave learned very quickly that Rodney is not someone he wants to make an enemy of.

What was their first fight over and how did they get past it?

Their first fight was over whether John was ready to leave the infirmary and how soon he could get back to work.  Carson had to mediate.  Carson always ends up mediating.

Which one is more easily made jealous?

Both.  They are both possessive and both get off on making the other jealous.  They are very tiring to be on a team with.

What is their favourite thing to get to eat?

John loves to watch Rodney eat chocolate mousse.  A little too much.  It’s now banned from the mess.  No-one needs to see their CO like that.

Who’s the cuddly one? What their favourite cuddling position?

Rodney initiates most cuddles but John loves them just as much.  His favourite is when Rodney burrows his head into John’s neck.

Are they hand holders?

No.  Rodney waves his hands about too much.  Hand holding is reserved for bedside vigils only.

The second John was cleared for duty, Rodney jumped him.

They both do.

After Rodney had a heart attack, John asked him to cut his hours back in the lab.  Rodney packed a bag and left instead.  Nobody on Atlantis talks about those three dark weeks.

John.  Especially after the heart attack.  Rodney never wants to see spinach again.

Which one is more organized and prone to tidiness?

John.  Rodney is clean but messy while John has spent too long in the military to be anything but neat.

Who proposes?

Rodney.  

Do they have joined Bachelor/Bachelorette parties or separate?

Joint, and only because Ronon insists.  Teyla gets offended that women aren’t tradiotionally invited and takes it upon herself to throw them the best bachelor party in the Pegasus Galaxy.  With strippers.  Rodney still doesn’t know where she got the dollar bills.

Who is the best man/maid of honour? Any other groomsmen or bridesmaids?

Nobody.  They marry in a simple ceremony on New Athos with Woolsey officiating.

Big Ceremony or Small?

Do they have a honeymoon? If so, where?  

Hawaii.  John surfs and Rodney complains about the UV rays.  It’s perfect.

Do they have children? How many?

They adopt for the first time after rescuing a small, three year old girl from a culling.  Six years later, they somehow have four kids.  “Rodney, they’re not damn kittens, stop bringing them home!”
