Not radioactive green, but definitely not the light straw yellow all the textbooks tell you to expect. I was perplexed. Well, I wasn't so much perplexed as what the actual fuck am I a Vulcan or something.
The blood nurse wandered by at that point to check I was doing okay, peered at the bag, and said knowingly, "Are you on the pill, dear?"
Before I could say whoa that is some Sherlock shit right there, lady she said cheerfully, "It's quite common for someone on the pill to have green plasma. Don't worry, it's normal. We can still use the plasma." Then she told me about another lady who had plasma so green it almost looked like lime syrup. I laughed, I shrugged, I kept watching the ice skating,
But tonight I decided I wanted to find out why is it so?
Turns out that taking synthetic oestrogen (as well as pregnancy, and rheumatoid arthritis) ups your levels of a protein called ceruloplasmin. Ceruloplasmin is a transport protein, and it happens to carry copper. Now, copper salts are green - you can see this in the Statue of Liberty, or the Flinders Street Station dome.
And that would be why my plasma is green. I have high (but not pathologic) levels of copper in my blood because my body thinks it's pregnant. Isn't science fun?
