My eyes glide across labels: costumes, kousen, taschen, chaussettes, and moccasins. Hovering between naming and narration, her taxonomical reflections jump from German to Dutch, French, and English. Objects appear to speak different languages to her. Maybe one garment brought her back to Austria; another had associations with Bergen; and another placed her somewhere on the plains of Oklahoma. I’m not a linguist or neurologist, but maybe if you’re a polyglot (which I’m also not), memories occupy different linguistic spaces of the brain. After all, stories are formed through the marriage of time and words. Temporality, languages, and landscapes shaped Gisèle’s neural architecture. Her taxonomies are an encoded map, but as an outsider it is one without a legend. - My drawing made for The Warp and Weft of Memory.
