The edges of the white horizon bled into the grayness of the sky, details lost to snowfall and abstracted into a blur of indistinct tone and shape. It was impossible to tell the time of day it without a wristwatch, and the ticking of mine was easily suppressed by the wind that swirled around us. 

How appropriate that the context of time was absent in the flurry. The day carried that feeling, and I lost track of the seconds...

Hello! I come with a heavy question. In an alternate universe in which the Death Note had no bearings on any of the characters' lives, how do you suppose Mikami's character would have turned differently as opposed to his portrayal in the original series? This includes how he would have conduct himself as a prosecutor and what his potential personal life would have been like. I'm interested in hearing your perspective. Have a good day!

I’m smiling a little because the short answer that comes to my mind is ‘bitter and isolated’ but that defines canon!Mikami pretty well, too. Let’s say… more bitter and isolated then. /pats the poor man

It’s interesting because for most characters who are in some way heavily affected by Kira moral, the starting point of that is still Kira’s appearance - if Light had never gotten a DN, their lives could have shaped up differently. Teru isn’t quite like that. He fucks up his mindset all on his own before Kira exists - before Light ever finds himself a Death Note, Teru turns himself into a person that can only truly thrive in a society where Kira is real. Externally, he probably doesn’t seem to change much, but the influence of Kira is still so super crucial for his adult life.

Kira is a door-opener for Mikami. Kira is the key that turns him from someone delusional into a prophet of a tangible potential new era. Without Kira, he remains delusional and can never talk about it with anyone without being exposed as exactly that.

As stated in his chapter, the idea that evil people will die in a heavenly judgement is already his ‘absolute truth’ in college time, before Kira appears. At first there’s not really a change inside Mikami, no matter if Death Notes exist or not - the God he has thought up is always real to him. Kira may have eradicated last doubts, but even before, there hardly were any left. God is real and Mikami will always start out thinking this.

But of course, the external influence changes. With Kira, Mikami is suddenly able to bring all his beliefs out in the open. He’s no longer a lunatic for believing in a punishing God because he is talking about a provable real phenomenon.  Mikami is always living socially secluded, but Kira does help him reconnect to other people to a degree. It’s no more ‘Teru against the world’ and more ‘Teru against a significant percentage of the world’ then.

Without Kira, Mikami never has this opening experience. The God inside his head won’t ever be understood by anyone. So I think in that sense instead of gaining more opportunities by a Kira-less world, Mikami actually has less of them in a sense.

The most reaching out Teru ever does in canon is when he speaks on TV (and subsequently meets Takada and is somewhat befriended by her) - I don’t really think that’s something that would happen without Kira. Well, at least not immediately or to the extend it does in canon.While Teru does care about changing the moral of people in the world, his primary motivation for going on TV is to make Kira, now on earth, see him. Without Death Notes, that falls flat for a start.

But now I’m going in the wrong order, so let’s skip back to the first crucial question that arises for me aka what happens to Teru’s God-belief it he’s not validated through Kira’s apperance. What if accidents keep on happening? And even then, are ‘accidents’ enough to sustain his religion?

I personally feel that for a long while the accidental deaths of criminals around him would continue to satisfy Mikami. He’s set up his world-view nicely so that everyone is more or less unrighteous and thus almost any death could be rationalized as ‘heavenly punishment’. They’re really no miracles in that sense.

But I think over a while he would find himself getting demoralized. We’ve seen Mikami’s budding fantaticism as a steadily intensifying process. I can’t imagine he’d be permanently okay with the idea of just a few criminals dying here and there. After all, he has a very arrogant and self-centered view of heavenly justice, too. 

Canonically he actually believes that specifically because he was righteous God decided this society is worth saving and came down to earth. Of course, this selfish belief is fostered by Kira, too, and does not reach this extend without him, but that’s kinda circular.

(As a short detour, Teru doesn’t view this quite as selfishly as it sounds, at least. He thinks he is a means that helps justice manifest, but it doesn’t matter to him (or so he tells himself) that it’s him specifically. The important thing is that any means to bring justice exist, whether that be him or not:

I mean, subconsciously he still very much wants it to be him, but whatever, getting off-track.)

In a world where Kira doesn’t exist and the years progress with society remaining unchanged, I think Teru would get frustrated with his work not making any larger impact. He would get displeased with the scope of his abilities. A few deaths around him and a normal conviction rate in court cannot change society. What he already experienced in middle school and uni is now going super large scale - he alone can be as righteous as he wants, the mundane impact will be minimal. The few deaths God sends around him suddenly seem small in comparison to the number of criminals in the world.

I suppose he would compensate for this by trying to be more righteous and appeal to God more (kill them all, God, kill them!) - but of course that just makes him more and more warped and extremist.

And this is where I think it could start having influences on his behavior at the job over time. 

In canon, Teru is a strict and dutiful prosecutor doubtlessly but he has Kira as a safety net. If he can’t get someone convicted properly in court then it isn’t really a problem because Kira is there to punish even those who are not caught by the legal system. Whether or not Mikami wins his cases, evil will definitely be eliminated.

I think Kira-less he starts out with that same attitude but does start losing it more and more - his conviction rate is ridiculously high in any case (not to mention that losing cases can be career death to Japanese prosecutors which is why some cases with guilty defendants are never even brought to court - the prosecutors fear for their job should the evidence be too iffy), but the pressure to definitely get people convicted rises a lot. From very high to VERY VERY HIGH.

Where canon Mikami is harsh and ruthless, non-Kira-AU!Mikami steps up his game. He’s absolutely merciless at getting confessions out of his suspects. 

This Mikami needs to win - he needs to make a difference and thus be able to work as a catalyst for divine punishments to also reach earth. That, of course, doesn’t really happen, because in this verse, God isn’t real.

It’s kind of fascinating, because in canon verse it is clear that Kira’s appearance if what makes Mikami more extreme and dangerous, but an absence of Kira seems to do the same on another level.

In this context, I can actually see him attempt to speak on TV after all. It would occur much later, because he doesn’t have the initial motivation to appeal to Kira, but he does have the motivation to make a larger impact on society. 

Even though Mikami doesn’t care about interpersonal relationships at all, he does care about the future of humanity as a whole after all.

However, I don’t think he reaches the audience quite the same way in this universe. His words fall on good soil in a Kira-verse where a majority of people has already adopted a mindset similar to Kira’s and thus similar to Mikami’s - in a non-Kira world he has a much more skeptical public to appeal to. 

This isn’t to say he’s not an appealing speaker at all, of course.

He’s doing pretty well on a non-Kira program canonically after all. 

This way he might still meet Takada, too. I can see her approach him regardless of whether or not Kira exists, but I think their relationship would retain an extra layer of distance in any case. Mikami’s core belief is still one he knows he cannot share and that will not be understood, but that he does absolutely believe in. Hence, he’s right, the world is wrong - all as always, except a little worse. Mr. Trust Issues has graded up a level here.

A Mikami in a non-Kira verse is lacking the hope and confidence that Kira has given him canonically. And even in canon - Kira’s victory in sight - he is a bitter, isolated person. That’s at the high of his hope and aspirations. Without the concrete manifestation of this hope? Eeeeww, no good.

Basically, he’s a sad creature but at least a successful man looking at him from the outside. From the outside he also doesn’t look all that different from canon!Mikami, let’s be real. I don’t think any onlooker can really tell his already cold eyes are a lot colder in that verse and a lot more frustrated and hopeless.

I am kind of wondering if there would be a turning point to this as he grows older. Everything so far was what I imagined he’d be like until roughly the age he canonically dies. I am wondering if he would abandon his God belief at some point in the future afterwards - but that feels like it gets very very speculative. I mean, I would certainly like to see an older Mikami go through a crisis as his faith reaches its limit, but that’s so very AU already.

One the other hand I also always thought he probably dies young - his head bashed in as he steps in for street violence or something.

I mean, this is also a wide field. I’ve played straight from canon just subtracting Kira, but life probably isn’t as linear. It’s very possible other events that might leave  a strong impact on him and change his course could technically happen.

THERE IS JUST A LOT THAT COULD BE DONE WITH THIS and it’s beautiful. These are just my thoughts playing it all straight from the interpretation of him I have at this moment. I hope it was kind of worthwhile despite the wordiness and again, thank you so much for asking!!

(As a PS - in a non-Kira verse, Light would likely get engaged to Kiyomi. If Kiyomi and Teru become acquaintances that could make room for a frustrated Light and  a frustrated Teru to meet. Angry bitter mid-30 bonding, hmmmh.

Though it also stands to argue whether or not Kiyomi would approach him if she was engaged - I can see that go both ways depending on full context?)

The umbrella, when it rains: Light. He's taller, it just makes sense. Mikami enjoys that fact anyway in spite of the reasoning. 

The popcorn at the cinema: Light. He's bigger on salty snacks anyway.  

The baby, when it cries: Mikami will take care of the baby dog. He's the one who wanted it in the first place. He might let him into bed though (sorry Light).

The ice cream cone, when they share:They're sad, boring people who aren't really big on sweet things.

The remote, when they sit down to watch a movie:Mikami. He has to ensure the volume is at a pleasing number (12, not 13).

The basket, when they go shopping:Light pushes it, but Mikami fills up the cart with items. 

The door, on dates:Mikami does. Light acts like he doesn't notice the gesture, but he totally does.

The other’s hand, most often:Mikami. He initiates most of their physical contact, really.

Their breath, upon seeing the other on their wedding day:Light later on that night when Mikami goes down on him. 

The camera, when they take pictures together:Mikami. He's into taking pictures and they don't have enough together anyway.

The umbrella, when it rains: Rin. Haru can't even be bothered to wear warm clothes when it's freezing outside or take his cell phone with him after all. 

The popcorn at the cinema: Rin will push up the arm rest between them, scoot over close to him and put it on both their laps to share even though Haru didn't want any in the first place. Romantic, huh?  

The baby, when it cries: Haru will. He has plenty of practice with kids thanks to helping with Makoto's siblings for years. 

The ice cream cone, when they share:Rin, usually, unless Haru coerced him into ordering some gross seafood flavor. Then he'll let Haru have it and grudgingly try it.

The remote, when they sit down to watch a movie:Rin, just because Haru won't care as much.

The basket, when they go shopping:Rin. He'll let Haru choose what to buy since he's a good cook, but do the steering because it's a hassle. 

The door, on dates:Haru if he gets there first. Rin other times.

The other’s hand, most often:Haru. It always seems to catch Rin off-guard when he decides to (or maybe he was just about to himself), but he doesn't mind it.

Their breath, upon seeing the other on their wedding day:Haru. Rin is doing too much smiling and crying. 

The camera, when they take pictures together:Rin. Haru doesn't get why he needs to take so many that are almost exactly the same.

The popcorn at the cinema: Rei to prevent it from spilling, but Nagisa would be the one doing most of the eating.

The baby, when it cries: Rei would have read all of the books and would try his best, but Nagisa's a lot better at it.

The ice cream cone, when they share:Nagisa would and would hold it up to Rei's face to give him a bite when he wanted some. 

The remote, when they sit down to watch a movie:Nagisa to turn up the volume and Rei to turn it down. "You'll ruin your hearing!"

The basket, when they go shopping:Rei. Nagisa would try to get all the sweet things though and Rei would chide him and tell him it's too much.

The door, on dates:Rei would like doing it.

The other’s hand, most often:Nagisa, especially in public to lead him around. Rei would more likely to just reach over and take his hand  when they're alone together.  

Their breath, upon seeing the other on their wedding day:Rei: "Beautiful." Nagisa would probably be crying already.

The camera, when they take pictures together:Nagisa even if he's got shorter arms. He'd coerce Rei into selfies pretty much 24/7.
