The CFA Experience: Clearing Level 1

This post is to share with you about how I prepared for my CFA L1 exam. I am writing this post because I know how many times I have searched on the internet to get some tips from people who had made it through. 

 CFA is a huge investment, at least it was for me. When I had filled the application, I knew I had to clear it, at the very least, give it my best shot. I filled my CFA December L1 form in mid July and started preparing.

One of my senior who made it through gave me one funda- "Cover your syllabus twice before you give the exam."

I made this plan - '1 detailed reading followed by 2 revisions'. 

I did my complete preparation from Schweser books and in my opinion they are sufficient to sail you through L1. 

My 'detailed reading' was all about learning the concepts. I loved it. I was learning so much and I solved the questions given at the end of each topic in Schweser. Thereafter I began the first revision and while revising I started making short notes. For now I had the general idea about the syllabus, I knew what was needed to be included in the short notes. 

I did the topics which I found tough very seriously and made sure I understand them.Then I attempted some tests from the CD they give with Schweser booklet. Sometimes 30 min, 1 hr, just to practice some questions.  A month before the exam, I started doing the practice papers that is provided in Schweser booklet by sitting for 3 hrs at stretch. I got lest than 70% in the first one. I then focused on my speed and analyzed in what sections was I making mistakes. I worked more on these topics. I gave a total of 6 practice papers before the exam and scored more than 70% in rest of the five. 70% was my baseline - because I had read on some blog that if you get more than 70%, you are through. 

I started my second revision 10 days before exams. This was not a detailed revision and I just went through all the topics to feel confident. In  last two days, I focused on short notes and made sure I remembered all the formulas.

The D- Day

Exams went smooth. But giving the two exams each of 3 hours one after another completely drained me off. It was a long time back when I used to give my JEE practice papers worth 6 hrs in a single day. If you have gone through the CFA ethics code, you will understand why I cant tell anything more about the paper and D-day. 

Results 

I passed the exam with more than 70% in all topics, so Mission CFA L1 was a success.
