The sound of the engine roared all around the cabin as the plane approached its destination, the clouds giving way to land dotted with intersecting houses and roads and the occasional forests and fields. Max vibrated in his seat as they started their descent toward Saint-Dizier, his face pressed against the window as the airbase came into view below them.
The next time he’d be up here, it’d be in a fighter jet, flying with Charles.

The sudden silence from the living room made Max look up from the stovetop, eyes snapping to the kitchen doorway. Slowly, he turned the burner off and held his breath, listening intently for any noises.
There. A small, nearly imperceptible sound so full of pain and despair it made his heart twist in his chest.
The half-cooked meal was abandoned, Max sprinting to the living room where he’d left Charles an hour ago so he could get started on lunch. The sight that greeted him stole his breath away, freezing him in place.

Charles stared blankly at the ceiling of his hospital room, his body heavy and leaden. Someone had left the curtains open and winter sunlight shone across the sterile white room, making it look even bleaker. Next to his bed, his phone lay dark and silent.

Charles woke up surrounded by warmth, his head resting on something much firmer than his hotel pillows. He scrunched his nose, a little disgusted at the feeling of something flaky and dried on his stomach and inner thighs, and groaned softly when every single muscle in his body protested his movements. Wow, he hadn’t been this sore since basic training.
Blinking his eyes open, he frowned a little at the sight of pale skin and hard pecs in front of him. The memory of the night before slammed into him like a freight train.

The soft sound of breathing in his ear slowly stirred Charles awake. He scrunched his nose slightly in displeasure, and nudged into the chest under his cheek to try and get the person to be quiet so he could go back to sleep. There was a moment of blissful silence before the noise restarted and Charles grunted, annoyed.
Resigned to his fate, the brunette sighed and blinked his eyes open, thankful that the shades were closed and the room was still bathed in semi-darkness. Tilting his head up, he smiled at the sight of Max still deeply asleep, his mouth half open, drool crusted at the corner of his mouth. Giggling softly, Charles licked his thumb and swiped over it, watching mesmerized when the blond smacked his lips together and sighed contently. He looked so peaceful, his serene expression a sharp contrast to the bite marks and scratches littering his body.

“Charles!” Edward yelled, his chair tipping over as he rushed after his counterpart.
And then Max was alone with only the clatter of the chair for company.
