“Regulus…?“ Narcissa asks tentatively, narrowing her eyes at him slightly. His behaviour worries her far more than it usually would -how could it not, given the times they were living in?-, and she isn’t sure how to respond to Regulus now. “Regulus- what has happened exactly?“
Things to think about (Or not because they are unpleasant): Walburga and Orion Black were first cousins, and had children together. They also come from a very old pureblood line, which is known to have inter-married a lot amongst themselves, or to have married other members of the “Sacred 28″. Basically, they have a pretty shallow gene pool. This makes it very likely that Walburga and Orion could have passed on autosomal recessive disorders to their children. Basically- they both could have been non-symptomatic carriers of genes from common grandparents- if they had any of these genes in common, then there would be about a 1 in 4 chance that any child they had would develop the disorder.
There is also about a 50% chance that the child would be a carrier of the disease, either non-symptomatic or with very mild symptoms.
Essentially, by simple laws of genetics, if Walburga and Orion had any similar genes for recessive disorders, there would only be a 25% chance that a child of theirs would not have any trace of the disorder. Granted, there are a lot more complexities that fuck up the numbers on this but basically
It is entirely reasonable to assume that Sirius or Regulus (Or both, possibly) were very sickly as children, and that they may have struggled with immune disorders or blood disorders such as hemophilia in their every day life.
Not really sure where I’m going with this but basically it would be something interesting to keep in mind with the characters.
regulus mahler // 30 // hufflepuff // herbologist
sparknotes backstory:
★ muggleborn. his parents are new age hippies and jumped for joy at the prospect of having a “wizard” in the family. unlike many of his other muggleborn classmates, he wasn’t subjected to any cruelty because of his newfound powers. to this day, he remains very close to his parents and firmly has one foot in the magical world and another in the muggle. sorted into hufflepuff house without so much as a hesitation from the sorting hat.
★ while he got above average marks in most of his classes, regulus wasn’t a genius by any means. he mostly blended in with the rest of his hufflepuff classmates.
★ after graduating, he worked a few odd jobs here and there before finally landing a job as the assistant to a well regarded herbologist. he was a glorified gofer, only being allowed near the greenhouse on the rare occasion.
★ he recently opened up a successful potion shop along with one of his very close friends from hogwarts. regulus handles the harvesting, growing each component with love and care. his friend (having a knack for potioneering) is the one who physically brews the potions.
wants and needs: what i really need for him is his business partner and best friend. they own a potion shop right outside of hogsmeade. their gimmick is that each ingredient is grown with love and care. there’s a lil greenhouse near the shop where regulus grows each and every potion component which his business partner uses to carefully brew the potions they sell! aside from that, i’m open to enemies, friends, etc. feel free to hmu if you’d like to talk plots!
