SUMMARY: two girls, one (striped) egg.
As Nell waited for the girl who had offered the egg over the internet to arrive, she clicked through article after article about eggs and incubation, trying to pin down what would be the best way to make sure the thing would hatch safely. After all, if she wanted whatever was inside to grow into something she’d be able to summon, she had to get it to hatch first. The witch was already looking forward to creating a bond with whatever lay inside the shell of the mystery egg so that she might even, one day, get a summoning tattoo that would let her bring it forth at the drop of a hat. Just like the summoning tattoos she had for the hellhounds and cockatrice. Hopefully in time she’d have one for Greg, and then this new creature could join the ranks as well! When the ping of perimeter spell was set off, Nell didn’t even wait for a knock to open the door, already waving towards the girl who was approaching from the property line! “Hi! You’re the girl with the egg, right?”
Juniper, despite her aunt’s warnings, didn’t think there was anything wrong with meeting somebody off of the internet. She had an egg-- a striped one, as big as her head, and there was somebody who wanted it. Why would she hold onto it? It had shown up uninvited, quite literally, on her doorstep. Not knowing what was inside had led her to the decision of giving it away. Like she had repeated, she was not ready to be a mother-- or a caretaker, even. She held her bag to her chest, the egg securely inside as she walked from her home to the address that Nell had given her. When she arrived, she knocked on the door once, twice, three times. It opened a moment later. Juniper smiled at the girl and nodded enthusiastically, reading her lips. “Yes!” She nodded down towards her bag, “it’s in here.” It was a little heavier than she had remembered it to be, even overnight. “Can I give it to you now?”
Nell hadn’t even bothered to ask the girl’s name before sending her address to claim the egg, and she was only just now realizing that. Who had time for names when a giant egg had appeared, anyway? Her excitement was palpable as she stared at the bag in the girl’s hands, as if Nell could will herself to see right through it. However...there was one single reservation she had ever since Adam had mentioned a key trait of the egg and its appearance. “Could I see it? It just showed up, right? Has it made any sounds or wiggled or anything?”
“Wiggled?” Juniper dug into the bag after she set it onto the ground. She picked it up and held it up to Nell. “No?” Her brows furrowed as she looked at the egg, the stripes loud in the otherwise… plain room. “Do you not want the egg if it hasn’t wiggled?” Juniper shook the egg lightly. “We can make it wiggle?” Juniper had no idea what was actually in the egg, but all she did know was that she wanted it gone. She no longer wanted to be responsible for the egg, didn’t want to think about it, didn’t want to dream about it-- not like the one she had had last night.
“No, not necessarily- just sometimes a wiggling egg can mean that it’s near hatching. So I was just curious about that.” Or at least that’s what Nell’s internet search had provided her with. As the egg was revealed, the monochromatic stripes of the egg seemed to have a similar effect on Nell, desaturating her face as she took in the inarguably mime-esque egg. “So...it is striped. Like...a mime.” The witch’s old prejudice towards the silent community was quick to surface as she looked down at the egg. That thought was quickly pushed aside as she watched the girl man-handle the egg, and Nell instinctively reached out in an attempt to take the mystery egg from the girl. “No, don’t shake it!”
“Like a what?” Juniper scrunched her nose, then looked back down at the egg. It was growing heavy in her hands, so she pressed it firmly to Nell’s chest without much thought as she moved away-- if it dropped, it dropped. It was out of her hands now, quite literally. “So you’re now the mother!” The tiny brunette beamed at the older girl before putting her backpack back on. She looped her fingers through the straps and tugged them down, the backpack cinching on her back. “It looks a little bit like one of those soccer balls that Ariana and I ate. Or tried to eat. Tiny little people popped up and tried to bite us.” She frowned, then looked at the egg, “you should probably eat it before it eats you-- well, bye!” Juniper turned on her heel to leave, glad to be rid of the very thing that had caused her so much duress. Before she made it through the doorway, the curiosity that had built had her turning back around, “when it hatches, let me know!”
Holy shit the thing was heavy. Much heavier than one would think it would be just by looking at the egg, even taking its enormous size into account. “A mime!” Nell replied with exasperation tinging her voice, already having second thoughts about this egg and her potential ownership of it. But between how the other girl kept shaking the thing around, and her mentions of cracking it open online— Nell had zero confidence in the bubbly girl’s ability to take care of the egg. “I’m not the mother!” Nell protested, balking at the idea of being the bearer of something that sported the black and white stripes of a mime. “I’m just- I’m the-” The what? The caretaker? Was that really any better? Everything in her was telling her to shove the egg back at the girl who was walking away from the house, but it was the mention of eating what sounded to be a soccer ball that gave her pause once again. What if this chick tried to eat the egg? Whatever was inside deserved a chance at life...right? Nell couldn’t help but feel that she’d come to regret that thought almost instantaneously, but it was already too late as the girl paraded away, now eggless. “If this egg turns into something mime-y and murdery I’m suing you for false advertising!” seemed to be the only thing that came to Nell’s lips as the egg-deliverer walked off the property. As Nell shut the door behind her, she looked down at the egg once again, vaguely concerned by the way it seemed to dampen her words even as she’d yelled them. While she got the thing settled into a warm spot, there was only one question left echoing against her mind in distaste. Why’d it have to be striped?
