It really shouldn’t have come as a surprise they’d turned up to her engagement party, they were her father’s friend and business associate after all, and for all he knew that’s how Sofia knew them too. It was a little secret between them. Both in their own versions of happiness with their significant others, their affair being the only solace in their humdrum lives. The blonde approached them and reached to straighten their collar, a friendly gesture to most though charged with electricity between the two.
“Thank you for coming.” She said in her normal tone before lowering her voice. “Though I’d question as to why.”

“I guess I’ll keep the poison on standby then,” What was a playful joke sounded almost solemn passing her lips. Gaze fixed on the bubbling champagne in her glass. There was something so electrifying about being around Sofia, perhaps it was rooted in the secrecy of being together. The brush against her leg had her instinctively moving away, not because she didn’t like it but because of their taboo nature. They hardly ever shared moments in public, it was a risk they didn’t take but even hidden away in the Maldives it still felt… wrong? With a heavy breath, Atlas quickly relaxed. They had nothing to worry about at least in this moment. “So have I… our families are so similar,” she spoke quietly. There was no reason to argue over something they both knew to be true. The blonde shifted in her seat, looking at Sofia. “You say you’re not scared but there is something stopping you from telling him.”
“Until then we can stick to this for now.” She leaned forwards to take the champagne bottle and top up both their glasses. Sofia’s gaze dipped for a moment when she felt Atlas pulling away from her. Even though they were miles away from anyone they knew, there was a reflex even still and it caused a pang in chest that made her uncross her leg again, pulling away before bringing her glass to her lips again. “The same reason you haven’t told anyone around you. Isn’t it easier when it’s just ours? Nothing to consider except you and me.” Her voice was gentle, eyes meeting Atlas’ as she reached for her hand under the table. “Uncomplicated.”

Sofia wasn’t used to company late night in her apartment but she was used to being on her toes considering the quiet life she led under the noses of everyone she knew. She had entered her apartment after a long day and kicked her heels off, ready for a nightcap when she heard a noise outside on her balcony. Taking a pistol from a drawer by her front door, she approached cautiously as she spoke aloud for anyone to hear.
“Now, now. I’m the only one here who knows all the nooks and crannies where guns, knives and other delighful tools are hidden. You really don’t want to test me.”

The brunette blushed a bit, she should’ve let her know. “Sorry… I just wanted to surprise you with dinner” she murmured awkwardly, rubbing her neck with her hand. “Oh, that… yeah, I finished it sooner than I expected” she confessed, offering her a tiny smile. “Turns out I made an essay a few years ago based on the same topic and well, I just added a few things and now I have the whole weekend free” she told her. “Sorry… I should’ve texted you” she said again, feeling terrible about it.
“Yeah, well, you got a lil’ surprise of your own.” She tried to lighten the mood somewhat with a little chuckle, though her brows were still furrowed in concern that Maddie might have been alarmed by her pulling a damned gun at her. “That’s good.” She commented about her assignment though her mind was far from it. Closing the distance between them, she sat beside her and reached for her forearm, looking at her with soft eyes. “I’m sorry for scaring you there. Security alarms are only so good.” Not wanting to even broach the subject of why she was the way she was, instead happy for the brunette to know her as the art curator at the gallery she’d met.

“You could say it was my trade,” Jack admitted with a laugh, which was more that he would normally reveal about himself at a first encounter. But he figured the more was at stake, the more fun the game would be. He listened to her suggestion, the idea of a poker match between surprising him, but in a positive way. “That sounds like the type of game I’d enjoy,” he admitted, grin widening on his face as he also stood, taking his drink with him. “Lead the way, sweetie.”
The little hint wasn’t lost on Sofia, yet she delighted in the anonymity too. It wasn’t often she could parade herself with such little care, yet in this setting they were masquerading as a couple, allowing for such public intimacy. She grinned at him as he came on board as she lifted his chin. “Perfect.” She gave him a wink and turned to ask a waiter to help bring their drinks over to a booth, requesting a pack of cards for them as well as she took out a suitable tip to slip into his chest pocket. “Come on, loverboy.” She turned on her heel, eyes beckoning for him to follow to a cosy corner.

Sofia had been to too many events like this. They were busy, filled with people who pretended to know art and pretended they knew what they were talking about. She made small talk as she did but with a couple more glasses of wine in her her patience ran thin. She only had eyes for Reuben, and a mischievous plan came to her. Taking his hand and excusing him from whoever he was talking to, she walked with purpose, man in tow, to a room she had found earlier. "Come on, you." As soon as she opened the door and they crossed the threshold, she pulled at his tie to bring him to her level. "I've wanted you so badly all night."

Sofia walked through the door and the combination of the colder night air, quiet and solitude steadied her nerves somewhat. She took a deep breath and turned to Freddie when he spoke, he knew the words to make her smile.
She felt his hands on her and her own slid up his arms, one finding a home at the crook of his neck. "You look lovely too. You're always so natural at large parties. You shine." She chuckled, eyes meeting his, feeling the weight of the guilt of hiding such a large part of her life. "I love you."
