It really shouldn’t have come as a surprise they’d turned up to her engagement party, they were her father’s friend and business associate after all, and for all he knew that’s how Sofia knew them too. It was a little secret between them. Both in their own versions of happiness with their significant others, their affair being the only solace in their humdrum lives. The blonde approached them and reached to straighten their collar, a friendly gesture to most though charged with electricity between the two.

“Thank you for coming.” She said in her normal tone before lowering her voice. “Though I’d question as to why.”

“Are we a cliché?” Sofia mused, a few champagnes in her as she spoke to her lover. “The entire world knows how Romeo and Juliet ended.” She let out a self-deprecating laugh, shaking her head slightly at the stupidity of how it sounded. Still, there she was in a hotel in The Maldives, cut off from the rest of the world when she know just how much trouble the both of them would be in were their parents to find out. “It feels like we’re heading for something that’ll go up in flames but somehow a masochistic part of me wants to find out how it unfolds. Is that pessimistic of me?”

Sofia wasn’t used to company late night in her apartment but she was used to being on her toes considering the quiet life she led under the noses of everyone she knew. She had entered her apartment after a long day and kicked her heels off, ready for a nightcap when she heard a noise outside on her balcony. Taking a pistol from a drawer by her front door, she approached cautiously as she spoke aloud for anyone to hear.

“Now, now. I’m the only one here who knows all the nooks and crannies where guns, knives and other delighful tools are hidden. You really don’t want to test me.”

With a coffee in her hand, Sofia had taken a seat at the reception to check any appointments she had with May. The beginning of the week was usually busy with queries and requests from clients and artists alike though she wasn’t exactly in the mood to entertain that morning. The receptionist read out a few people who had left messages for her though her gaze was distracted. A glimmer of recognition shone in her eyes when she noticed someone in the street. She wondered if they spotted her too.

“Hello?” Sofia peered her door around the open gate of the garage she had been pointed to by a local. It was a small, dingy place she was in and the sooner she could leave, the better. Her rental had broken down a little ways down the road. It was spluttering for at least a mile until she threw caution to the wind and pulled over, annoyingly she had no luck trying to restart it after just parking it to one side and so she found herself in a tricky predicament.

“Hello?” She repeated into the seemingly empty room barring the vehicles hoisted in the air and a few on stands. “I need a mechanic if anyone’s here?”

“I’m sure upon learning who asked you here today, you know you haven’t come just to discuss art.” Sofia turned back to face her new companion. They were a connection of a foe of her father’s and she was there to hopefully turn the tables. A solo criminal always had reasons to swap sides and usually it was for the right amount of money and if not money, revenge.

“You weren’t supposed to be here tonight.” Her tone was cold towards her past lover, someone she had long burned bridges with. Sofia had taken them aside with a gesture towards the front door, now shrouded by the foliage at the front of the grandiose building. “Who invited you to my engagement party of all things?”

Stumbling through the door of the garage, Sofia cursed her stupid heels because she was going to be damned if she wore her driving sneakers for anything but driving. No matter what she was doing, she liked making an impression, even if the current one was that of annoyance and short-temperament.

“So, my car’s broken down and I need help. I can pay as much as you need as long as I can get up and running in an hour tops.” Having absolutely no time for chit-chat or small talk when the walk there took her almost a goddamn hour.
