I called a response over my shoulder, just hoping to be done with this conversation, I ushered Kirsten out of the diner.
Later that night...
I was beginning to get annoyed with Lorraine, and I decided it was best to leave the situation as quickly as we could.
I stood up from my seat
She forced a fake smile to me, and then back at Kirsten, as she followed my lead and we began to walk away.
Kirsten made a panicked glance at me for help, and then quietly mumbled out an answer
I stumbled over an explanation for who Kirsten was, and I hoped that Lorraine's probing for more information was just her noiseness, and not an indication that she knew I was lying
Suddenly, a voice from behind me broke the silence of our conversation
Lorraine Cantina. She was a shrill woman who works for local government, and always has her nose in everyone's buisness...
I shot Kirsten a quick glance to make sure she was okay, but she was simply smiling up at the woman politely.
It was sometimes impossible to work out what that girl was thinking...
My heart wrung with pain hearing her say those words - I didn't even know how to begin to explain to her that her family was gone...
She furrowed her brow and her eyes began to well up with the beginnings of tears
