This statement by Mihawk is one of the most astute and important in the entire manga. As far back as Arlong Park Luffy himself was saying how dependent he was on his crew. Marineford takes that idea and magnifies it tenfold--literally every chapter where Luffy has significant screen time, he is saved by someone else.

We joke about the Power of Friendship™, but the series is chock-full of examples of people helping Luffy and Luffy helping people in turn, and this unnatural charisma being the literal superpower that will lead him to achieve his dreams.

Observation Haki foreshadowing. I remember this moment causing a lot of confusion, and then Oda pulled the power move of not explaining how it works until Whole Cake Island.

I remember a lot of people complaining that about Mihawk not using haki with this, but he has a history of using the least effort necessary to win a fight and isn't invested in this war at all.

Or, perhaps, Buggy's haki outdoes Mihawks, as befitting the future Pirate King.

Unfortunately for Buggy, Mihawk doesn't care much for his balls

It's quite telling that showing the world the truth is what would lose their trust
