yeah barefoot gen is definitely a heavy series. the author of the blog post I linked had kinda similar feelings to you, and they noted that there aren't many very similarities between the 2 series besides the "war" theme. so it's likely just a way to convey gen's "flowers over war" feelings maybe?

they also mention that something in barefoot gen is called the “phantom trio”(?) (幻の三部), where the first character 幻 is also the kanji used for asagiri gen’s name
