The US has stationed six B-2 stealth bombers at Diego Garcia, its only major base in the Indian Ocean, amid rising tensions with Iran. Strategically located, the base offers powerful reach across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Diego Garcia, part of the Chagos Archipelago, was cleared of its native Chagossians in the 1960s–70s to build the base. Though Britain agreed in 2024 to hand the islands back to Mauritius after a 2019 ICJ ruling, it retained military control of Diego Garcia for 99 years. The island remains a key US launchpad—and now, a hotspot once again.
